Non-swimmer here. No one was home to teach me or put me in lessons. Pair that with a bit of a traumatic event in Hawaii when I was young. If I can touch the ground I kind of have the idea but never got the whole thing down

I worked with an Asian guy that couldn’t swim but would go canoeing and kayaking. I don’t understand how someone doesn’t know how to swim and I don’t understand why someone would get into water without knowing how to swim.

I can't. My mama took me for swimming lessons when I was little, but I refused to get in the pool.

My wife can swim, but she's not a swimmer. Like she won't die and no one will feel the need to save her in the deep end of a pool. But she's at most swimming to the sides and back to the shallow end. Her dad flat out can't swim, and I guess she just never had anyone as an example or put her in lessons. Blew my mind when I met her.

Pretty much how I learned, except instead of John Wayne tossing me, it was my 18 yr. old cousin Jimmy.

He took me to the deep end of a community pool when I was 8 and just threw me in and yelled at me what to do. I did manage to get to the side of the pool and he pulled me out and threw me back in until I didn't freak out any more and could at least dog paddle. Then he took the time to teach me how to swim properly.

I saved my sister, a kid that fell off a dock in 8 ft. of water and my first wife from drowning over the years, so it was a lesson well worth learning.

I never understood how someone can’t swim. I taught myself how to swim in about 15 seconds when I was a little kid by just watching the others in the pool.

There couldn’t be an easier thing to learn. I’d suspect the ability to swim is already encoded in our DNA.

If you can’t swim you have to be a complete dumb arse.

Probably shaved his legs and put on a skull cap to type this post

I can get where I need to go. But I can't tread water very long.

You can make a floatation device out of your pants or shirt.

Weird... high school swimming is in yards, and there has literally never been a 500 meter race distance. You'd think such an accomplished swimmer would know something like that

Problem with that is, you can be out in relatively shallow water touching bottom with head above the water and a rip tide comes along and you'll be a goner for sure if left to your own devices to survive.

It's happened to 2 people I know over the years, one a woman who was vacationing in Fla. and the other a friend of mine who was surf fishing, got dragged out by a rip tide and couldn't swim good enough to get back in.

Club swimming had long course meets and an entire season dedicated to it and has plenty of members who are in high school. However (in Louisiana), they offer the 400M distance for long course (meters) and the 500yd distance for short course (yards).

It could be total bullshite but it's very possible to be an "all state" swimmer at the 400M distance in high school without ever actually swimming that event FOR his high school

I can't. I'm the person at the beach standing on the edge watching the waves, stepping in a few steps, scurrying back, repeat, until I (sometimes) finally make it past the break.

Show me an adult who “can’t swim” and I’ll show you a person who panics in water. Assuming the person has at least seen people swim before, they don’t need more lessons; they need therapy.

Did it involve a Tiki idol, Peter?
