Seems like these are popular now instead of hotels but my aunt rented one in turks and kakoos Island over Christmas and the electrical was run so bad that when she plugged her hair dryer in while the TV was on it blew out a giant fire ball and caught her hand on fire for a second and had to go to ER. Anyone else been burned?

Not me but a friend of mine had one cancel on him the day he had arrived in Italy.

Hotels in Europe during the summer aren't cheap.

My FIL rented a VRBO in NYC about 10-12 years ago that didn't exist. Address was supposed to be like #316. Taxi dropped him off and he stood there staring at #314 on the left, and #318 on the right.

Ended up staying at a Hampton and never got his money back.

not AirBNB but VRBO (same idea)

Rented a house in Key West before the hurricane destroyed the island. Home owner would not refund my rental even though 75% of the island was unreachable.

Luckily i had the trip insurance.

Was thinking about renting a place in Gatlinburg a few months ago until I read the reviews about how the owner of the place stays in the same house and several people commented about him watching them constantly.
One even said that the guy tried to come into the bathroom as he ( the guest) was showering.

Couldn't believe the owner of the place allowed those reviews to be shown.

Turks and Caicos.

And if you rent an Airbnb in a foreign country, much less a Caribbean island, you should expect the worst.

i was not burned but i recently stayed in one and got a weird vibe from the owner. Prior to check in she was really friendly and out going. Upon arrival, the same, very accommodating and friendly. I told her we would be in and out a lot but she would not notice. When we checked out i sent her a Text saying thanks and left the place spotless and never heard a word from her.
