Got the offer in the mail for $38 one year membership and was thinking of joining. My car is getting up there in age (180k Lexus) and I hate the thought of getting stranded if it dies on me.

What kind of discounts/perks do you use regularly?

Not AAA, but AA, does that matter?

AAA is amazing. Get it. They've saved my arse several times since I got it.

We've had it for years. One tow a year more than pays for it. Even things such as a flat tire, if I'm out of town my wife can call and they will come deal with it.

As far as discounts... they aren't great. 10 percent off many hotels and other places. The discounts aren't enough to make it worthwhile, but as an add on for the main service, it's great.

I have roadside assistance through my insurance company, you probably do too.

Mostly hotel discounts. Not sure if it's worth it, but I like to have it since our Subaru is a piece of shite.

If you have a deal lined up for a $38 yearly membership, it’s a no brainer. Considering the average one-time tow is over $200, you get up to 6 tows included with the membership. If you have a car with that kind of mileage, AAA will give you some peace of mind.

They do battery replacement where they charge around the same price as Auto Zone or O’Reilley’s.

Yes, I have it, gold membership. You can get some better deals on hotels and car rentals. I have other discounts available and shop them all, sometimes AAA is the best deal, sometimes not.

I have it more for peace of mind with my daughter and wife who are out of town for college and work commute.

I recently got stranded and had to have my truck towed to my house. It was a simple repair for me to do but not at midnight on I-10 in NOLA.

I love it. Used it to get my battery jumped off, changed tire, free maps and city guide, and passport photo.

I will never not have it.

Been a member since I have been driving, AAA has saved my bacon on many occasions over the years. Jump starts, tows, lockouts, tire changes for the wife.

Doesn't even have to be your vehicle, you just have to be there when they show up, have used it before when out with friends and they locked their keys in their car.

I got it for me (female often traveling alone) and added my son who went away for college in a safe but older vehicle. They've towed him twice (not the same vehicle) and I've never needed it but use the AAA hotel discount often.

They'll change flats, unlock doors etc but I am pretty sure that your car insurance has roadside assistance as well so ...

Compared with AAA, check out the details. If you believe a tow truck has a high likelihood of being necessary over the next year, the typical insurance company assistance is very limited in scope (miles for tow, what services they will offer, etc.).

Its always great to have. You get discounts at most hotels too. I know that I used them to re-key my truck and I saved a ton of money going through AAA.

I’ve been a member since 1999 and have yet to regret it.
It’s been my pop-a-lock, tow truck driver, flat tire savior, and my need a new battery (or a jump) hero. This year alone they’ve changed changed my battery once and fixed two flat tires.
They’ve also came to the rescue when I was riding with my mom (in her car) and she got a flat.
Because YOU’RE the member (not your vehicle), it provides service wherever you are and regardless of who’s vehicle you’re in.
Not to mention, they’re so freaking nice! The day I needed a new battery was one of the hottest days of the summer! The guy who came to change it showed up with an ice chest of bottled water for me and my kids.
Get it. It’s worth it.

AAA can be good, but you almost certainly have generic roadside assistance through insurance, a credit card, or whatever. If you're just worried about needing a tow you can stick with that.

But - AAA-branded trucks can be pretty sweet if you need more than a tow. I had a battery die and jumping didn't help, so I called expecting just a tow to the local service station. The guy showed up and not only replaced the battery on the spot but also diagnosed and repaired badly corroded cables. It did cost extra but only $100. If a shop had done the work it would have been far more.

But if you only need a tow then generic roadside assistance from your insurance will be enough. Call your agent and find out if there are fees for using it.

$38 one year membership

Read the fine print. The $38 membership may limit the free tow to 3 miles. The more expensive memberships have tow limits up to 200 miles.

State Farm roadside assistance was worthless the one time I tried to use it. My alternator died and I called State Farm. They tried to arrange a tow truck but could not find a tow truck willing to give me a tow with a less than 6 hour wait. I hitch hiked to 50 miles round trip to get an alternator and was up in running in about 4 hours.

We live in the middle of nowhere and have the longer distance tow option. And we've used it three or four times in the past fifteen years. A hundred mile tow one time (99.6 miles when we had the 100 mile option).

We'd given my aged in laws a membership "to take the place of the mechanic grandson they didn't have" and they used it and ended up switching their insurance to AAA.

I've had it since I was in Grad School. Never had a problem with their service
