This shouldn’t count towards PTO but it definitely should count towards FMLA (Friday Monday Leave Act) hours.

US Army does that...

I think the rest of the services do it.

Never heard of anyone else.

This was true in the Army.

Thats because, technically, youre on duty 24/7, 365. They don’t Have to give you weekends off stateside . And when I was at sea we worked 7 days a week. So “sandwich leave” makes sense in the military.

Also the 30 days of leave per year + holidays is way more generous than most civilian jobs. If they didn't charge sandwiched days no one in the military would be at work.

This is how military leave works. Even worse, if you left on a Saturday and returned home following weekend on Sunday you got charged 8 days for only 5 duty days off. Return home on Monday and you get charged 10 days for only 6 work days off.

Returning from leave on a non duty day was considered leave status but departing on non duty day was chargeable leave.

In the civilian world this is the only place this makes makes sense. I share oncall duties with some co-workers for all weekends and holidays, but instead of running our leave through HR we just handle it internally, I'm supposed to be on call next weekend but I'm going to wherever, can you cover me, sure, next time you cover me, and it's all just handled without some over-educated HR cvnt micromanaging our operation.

What is the supposed benefit of this?
Another idiotic policy with no value added.

This is like a few manufacturing plants i worked for in the past limiting the amount of people who could take vacation around Thanksgiving and Christmas and then basing who could do it on seniority. Every year you'd end up with a bunch of young employees at work that can't do anything without their supervisors or lead men at work to tell them what to do, then the next week a bunch of old gray heads at work bitching because their apprentices weren't at work.

Unless you work on weekends this should not count towards your leave.

Would a company rather you be gone 3 straight work days? Or on a Friday and back in office Monday 3 separate times of the year?

IMO it’s easier to cover for or catch up on one missed work day occasionally than a string of missed days

Railroad did something similar. You were granted 3 unpaid days in a 6 week rotating period, but only 1 if it fell on the day after a holiday, rest day or pld.
