that's what we called our fridge my entire life growing up. I rarely hear that term used anymore.
Because the people who used the term "ice box" have all died...
It was the people who probably had an ice box...

I think that term fell obsolete at the same time as the Berlin Wall.

Right next to the hot water heater.

Not since my Meemaw passed.
Me too. Both Grandmothers called the fridge an icebox.

My great grandmother still had an actual ice box in her house. She had a fridge by then but the ice box was still used as storage.

I remember my Mom having to fight to defrost the freezer in the top of our old refrigerator.
When she finally had enough of it my Dad hauled it to the dump and those guys put it in their building and used it for many more years. Thing was 20 yrs old when we got rid of it.

My dad had an ice box as a kid and he’s only 65
ETA: he also refers to shorts as short pants

My grandpappy called it a Frigidaire. And he called a couch a davenport.

Seriously?
Your dad was born in '61 and his parents still had an ice box, did he grow up in Hooterville.?

A. Norwegian icebox. The ice was placed in the drawer at top. B. Typical Victorian icebox, of oak with tin or zinc shelving and door lining. C. An oak cabinet icebox that would be found in well-to-do homes.

I had one for years. Used it for storage in the kitchen. Looked cool. You put ice in and it kept food just above safe temps. I also had a 1940s Ammonia fridge. Actually the guy i sold it too is still using it. Those things last forever. But if they leak they can kill you.

I will still say ice box from time to time.

other than the little clear plastic cover falling off the inventory pad (which is totally my fault being a bad kid who broke things) the damn thing still looks practically brand new inside and out.
ETA you can't look at those photos (only a couple years old) and tell me that thing wasn't built to last a millenium.
damn shame what we accept now as reasonable life-spans for appliances.

It probably weighed a ton and would still work today, unlike the crap that has been mass produced south of the border or in some 3rd world country with cheap components and modern coolants that don't cool worth a damn in the name of preventing the Ozone Hole.

My wife and--because of her--my kids call it an icebox.
Every damn time my response is "this isn't the 1930s, its a refrigerator".
