My dad, but with booze.

My mom, my brothers, aunts, and uncles all tried our hardest. Gave him multiple interventions. He went to rehab twice but to shut us up. He started having an affair and he left. Said he just couldn’t give up drinking. It hurts. Esp bc he thinks he’s done nothing wrong. I pray every week in church that he wakes up and is able to overcome his addiction and become the man I know he’s capable of being but that’s all I can do now.

I also do believe that after a certain number of years of substance abuse that there is no going back. The damage to the brain is done.

My 32 year old nephew died a couple years back of a fentanyl overdose. Had been a user half his life due largely in part to his idiot enabling Mom. Kept him in steady supply of alcohol since he was 16 and was well aware of his other vices shortly after. At least he’s not suffering anymore.

I’m really sorry to hear about what your folks are going through brother. Be there for your parents, though. I think that we all take our parents for granted for too long in life. Maybe this was a wake up call from God to bring you closer? Regardless, I’m very sorry

Have the doctors told you this is permanent? The brain can heal itself depending on how it was damaged.

About 24 years ago. I took nitrous while I was driving a motor vehicle. Stupidest thing I ever did. Was on the Interstate in Birmingham. Nailed the side wall. Not because I did wrecked the car. Turned out the car next to me side swiped me at the exact same time. When the car stopped I looked at me friend and he was shocked. He had some sort glasses on and one of the lenses was out. Then a van pulled up next to us and said run boys that guys got a gun. The dude that hit me had gotten out of his car with a gun (gang member) My friend ran and jumped off the interstate. Then out of no where a cop pulled up and I was safe. My friend though we could not find. He had fallen to the road below after jumping off the interstate and crushed his pelvis and hip. Learned a good lesson that night. We did not get in trouble. They found the guys gun in the ambulance at the hospital the driver of that car was fine but was brought in for a ct scan.

Yeah, a cousin who wasn’t going to amount to much anyway. Here are a few high (low?) points:

- started smoking, snorting, and drinking everything he could get his hands on in high school when his parents divorced

- in and out of jail and rehab, couldn’t hold a job, 3 kids by 2 baby mamas

- got arrested for passing out in his car in the Walmart parking lot high on drugs with all 3 kids in the backseat

- got “clean” for a couple months, then his mom got cancer so he relapsed

- went to rehab where they took the whole gang on an outdoor excursion…he promptly dove off a cliff into a lake, but missed the lake and smashed his face open on a rock and got rushed to the ER

- his mom spent her last months alive caring for him and his busted arse face before she finally succumbed to her cancer

He’s in his 40s now; last I heard he was washing dishes at a pizza place.

That’s a thing? I didn’t think nitrous could do that.

This thread is one of the saddest collection of stories I've ever read.

Maybe these stories will discourage someone somewhere from ever trying hard drugs and save his or her life as a result. I hope so.

I haven't read all the replies, so excuse me if this has been mentioned. Is he capable of taking care of himself? Or is he disabled? I would look into adult care centers where he can live and someone is always there to monitor and take care of him. Being a caregiver is exhausting. I take care of my elderly mother and between work and home, she lives with me now, I'm exhausted all the time.

Prayers for your parents.

I lost a good friend 6 weeks ago, herion overdose. 30 years old. Beautiful soul, so much potential. So fkn sad.

Well, I was in my early 20's in the late 1960's, so I knew several who died from drugs. Didn't hang with the speed freaks or junkies, but some otherwise good young people died in various ways.

A guy I had played chess with several times did some heroin after drinking. I was told that he couldn't be revived and the people with him parked him in the hospital parking lot in his own car.

My daughter's half sister had migraines and her junkie boyfriend who was on methadone treatment gave her one of his pills. She wasn't a junkie and the dose killed her. My daughter found her with her 18 month old boy crawling on her body.

Downhill with adderall only?

Surely there’s more to this rock bottom story. Adderall users tend to be high functioning individuals in the right frame of mind.

lol that shite will frick you up too.

Suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, sleep deprivation which also leads to being so tired you fall asleep at the wheel.

Plenty of people abuse adderall. I had a friend get on adderall after he got this promotion. Ended up abusing, losing his job and wound up in the mental hospital.
