Anyone ever used an engineless push mower?

How well do they work? I live in the city and have a really small yard (maybe 300-500 sq. ft.) but I'm thinking this would be quicker and easier than weed eating the whole thing every 5 days in the summer.
They start at $60 on Amazon. What's the catch?

For that small of a yard, it may be ok. Those things are a pain in the arse though for anything but the smallest of yards.

They work quite well, but require some work. Would not use for a normal sized lawn. BUT should be perfect for your small lawn.

I've got an old reel mower I use.

You would do better with your ninja sword

If you have thick grass, a cheaper one will suck. Cheaper meaning less than $200.
And I'm talking about a reel mower.

Yes, keep blades razor sharp. If you don't want to keep blades sharp just forget about it. Don't let grass get past a weekly cutting.

What kills me is they cost about as much as a basic side discharge push mower. I'm pretty sure you can thank the hipsters for that. Seriously just buy the $140 side discharge push mower with no bags and no-frills. It will also be pretty lightweight as well.

I have cut my small lawn with a fiskars stay sharp reel mower for the last 1.5 years. It works great provided you don't have many weeds or let the grass get too long. Fiskars stay sharp mower

Well, first off, it won't be easier than weed eating the yard. That said, reel mowers work pretty damn good as long as you have discipline. You have to keep sticks picked up and cut your grass frequently to keep it from getting the slightest bit tall. If you can do that, it is a pretty good way to get a little activity every few days.

Tried one of those one time. 3" tall summer St. Augustine grass in New Orleans laughed at me as I toiled away in vain. Bought the cheapest gas mower I could find at Lowes and got my revenge.
Like other posters mentioned, you have to keep the blades razor sharp and have to mow once a week.

You can get a battery-powered lawn mower for $169 at Home Depot. No cords, no gas, and it folds up.

When I was a kid, mowed with one of those reel mowers. Worked well, and started every time.

Do you have any trees in your yard? They can suck a lot of you have any twigs or tree debris in the yard. Otherwise, they're fine.

Young fella, back in my day we didn't have powered lawn mowers. No sir, we pushed them to cut the back forty before planting, even through six inches of snow.

Tough if you have a lawn of a wide blade grass like St. Augustine or even Centipede. Have to keep them sharp, don't let grass get high. Good for the grass if you keep the blades sharp.

As a kid, wet St. Aug is a bitch.
