Throughout the 70-80s it was a growing area. Schools have become one of the worst in the country. (Actually rated as least educated around 3 years ago). Crime is on the rise. It’s not quite as bad as Port Arthur but that element is moving in. If you are moving to this area go north to the Hardin county areas (Silsbee,Lumberton). About the only thing the Beaumont/ Port Arthur area has going for it is high paying plant jobs.

I lived in the area about 4 years. I moved to Beaumont and lived up by the mall. I liked living there and it's really similar to BR. It was really suburban and had tons of options for dining and entertainment. After a couple of years, I moved to Orange and really liked living there. It's a small town, but a cool area with tons of history. A few months later, I got flooded and there was a housing shortage throughout the region. So I couldn't find a place to live outside of renting rooms. I ended up moving to Atlanta for a new job.
In my 4 years, we got major storms multiple times a year and had flooding many times. It's a part of life there and jacked up trucks are a necessity. The region gets more rain than the Pacific northwest. I won't live near the Gulf or another major body of water again..

Yep, my favorite Mexican restaurant is in Beaumont. South of I-10 across the tracks.

It’s better than Louisiana, but the a-hole of Texas.

Go to Mont Belvieu right up the road. Seems like it's a nice area and has an insane high school.

2.5 years and peaced the frick out. There is a lot of ghetto in town. All the outlying areas are redneck havens. It floods everywhere. There is nothing to do there except go fishing. There are tons of well-paid blue collar guys so be prepared to race an F-250 with 44" wheels

Late 1940's and after my parents first married with dad's new job at DuPont in Orange, mom taught 6th grade and had 65 students in her class. She quit teaching after that year. There was a huge chemical plant construction boom on Chemical Row.

Beaumont is weird. Culturally Texas doesn’t want it and Louisiana doesn’t want it. Sort of reminds me of Shreveport and Monroe with better food options. The city proper isn’t great but the region in general is decent once you get outside of town.
Easy access to Houston & LC via 10. Close enough to get in and out without needing a hotel. COL isn’t too bad. The city itself has all the major chain stores you’d need on a regular basis.
Just like anywhere I guess it depends on your lifestyle. Id rather be in Beaumont than Monroe or Shreveport based on geography alone. Being close to IAH is very convenient. Also it’s under 3 hours to LSU.
