I'm glad to know the family is going to handle the funeral/burial arrangements. I was afraid that might fall on your shoulders as well since they were estranged from him. If they loved him, they are going through a living hell right now.
If there are services, will you be attending? I know you mentioned the distance, but not where that might take place.
It was something I was worried about, as well, but prepared to take on. I will be attending the services. I haven't directly spoken to the family, yet. In a way I'm scared to. I have a feeling I will be "blamed" for this, even though, in my honest opinion, this was started by them exiling him.

I'm struggling to understand how the weight of a grown man wouldn't rip the ceiling fan out of the sheetrock

If it was anchored in to a ceiling joist like it should be.

Don't even think that way. It honestly doesn't matter what they think about you and any blame on you would be terribly misplaced. It wouldn't help anyone to play the blame game at this point. I would hope they would thank you for calling the police and offer some condolences to you for having gone through receiving such an awful text message, but even if they don't, placing blame on anyone isn't the right thing.

Because they are usually pretty well anchored. They're not just hanging on sheetrock.

Man, I couldn't imagine experiencing something like this. I am sorry you have to deal with this.

Yeah. Thankfully, it was just a regular whore being an attention whore.

did you establish that he is actually dead?
your OP says you got an email.
no. I have not experienced that.
You ask forgiveness. You say I am sorry. I am truly sorry. feel it.

I'm sorry for your loss.
When I was 7, I found my dad after he committed suicide. My mom found the letter a few days later. This was in 83 so it was before Internet and email.
I spent years hating him, but then I realized he was just sick, and things must have really been bad in his head for him to take that drastic of a step. Back then, depression or mental illness wasn't something that was talked about. You were just supposed to man up and deal with things.

That's when you make your exit. He was your friend and u did what you could. You know that. You owe his family nothing. Especially if they are going to get nasty. It's really a no win situation. Do you want to get in a shouting match with parents who lost their son? No matter how you feel it will not be satisfying. You did what you could he was alive and you'll have paid your respects. That would be where you close that chapter of your life.
Remember, it's just a chapter for you. Their life is essentially ruined. Unless they are sociopathic in their feeling toward their son.

I personally talked one brother of a friend out of killing himself more than several times. This occurred over the span of 10 or so years. We weren't even really close but I was close with his brother who wasn't around on the occasions I got involved.
It's over, he eventually did the deed, at the front door of the person who he blamed for the injury caused by his own youthful stupidity.
I still struggle with it because I didn't answer his call the night before because I just was mentally exhausted that night. frick him for doing that and owning so much of my thoughts since then. We weren't close so this wasn't a life changing event for me and my wife helped know it was the farthest thing from my fault. Regardless, I still have the sad when I think about it.

Sorry to hear for your loss.
May your friend RIP.
The only thing I can say is time will take care of your pain.
I hope you can find peace for yourself. If you let it, this will eat you up. Mourn your friend and remember him by talking about him when a story allows it.
Eventually you'll smile when you think about him remembering only good times.

I've been exactly where you are. My dad committed suicide in 2010. He was 66 yrs old and had obviously been planning that for awhile. He was a Vietnam veteran and carried a lot of demons that I didn't know anything about. He killed himself at our camp with my wife, kids and my mom in the house. I've come to realize that he was so far gone at that point that nobody could get through to him. He'd made up his mind and he was going to follow through. Honor your friend and remember him for being your friend.....not the way he died.

I am going to try to give you a different perspective on this.
You look at it as "What did I do wrong". "Why did I miss the signs?".
You were probably the only friend he had in this world. He trusted you enough to take care of his most valuable possession, his dog. You gave him comfort that his most loved possession will be properly cared for.
Some people get into destructive patterns of thought and that is not your fault. Do not let that drain your energy. Every time you see the dog, remember that you gave comfort to your friend in his time of need.

Yes. I came home one day in 8th grade and there was a note from my mom in Word when I turned on the computer.
I had come home and thought she was sleeping, turns out she ate a shite ton of pills.
She was unsuccessful in her attempt and has been good since then. This was in 1998. Scared the shite out of me.

Well I know it's hooked into the boards above the hmsheetrock but I couldn't reach up and grab the fan and just swing from it without ripping it out.
