If the person signing happens to be a Negro and they are signing the word, 'ask', do they spell it a-s-k, or a-x-e?

A couple of points here.

The FCC is REALLY sensitive to matters involving the deaf, and broadcasters are tightly held to a fine line on serving that part of the audience. So including an interpreter for 'life and death events' has become SOP.

Closed captioning of live events is REALLY expensive, so if the government is providing an interpreter, so much the better for the broadcasters - just widen the shot and all the boxes get checked.

So you'll be seeing them more of them in the future.

I've seen signers at the recruiting bash, but that was 10-15 years ago. They don't bother me.
