Anybody ran into a "cowkiller" before?

I used to see them all the time as a kid and they scared the crap out of me after one stung (or bit?) my mom out in the garden. Their heads are like steel and damn near impossible to kill by just stepping on them.
Saw a huge one this morning for first time in a long time and chopped him in half, furry demon was still crawling around.
Something I have noticed, I never see more than one at a time. Are they just so damn mean that they can't colonize or something?
For those that may not know, they look like ants but apparently they are actually wingless wasps:

No, but there was a thread yesterday that was about the pain different insects caused when the stung/bit.
cowkiller was listed and sounded like a painful SOB.

I see them occasionally and run away screaming like a little girl

I picked one up like a dumbass when I was about 7 because it looked fuzzy and cool. I learned my lesson, and ain't messed with one since.

I see them in my backyard all the time. They aren’t aggressive, they just crawl in the grass. Wear shoes, live and let live.

We always called them velvet ants growing up. They'd always show up when the carpenter ants were most active.

Don't see em as much as I used to. Seen a few this year.

Saw one last week in Baton Rouge. First time ever seeing one. Couldn't tell if it was ant or wasp but it looked nasty!

That is actually their real name if I am not mistaken. I think it is the "Eastern Velvet Ant".
EDIT: They are also referred to as Panda Ants, never heard that one before.

They suck and will light you up when they hit you.

Picked one up in middle school. I cried for probably an hour. Most painful thing I've ever experienced

Yeah, they are actually wasps. The female is wingless, but the male has wings, doesn't sting, and is about half the size of the female.
Saw one yesterday in the backyard. Never been stung by one and hope I never do.

Had one of those bastards just strut through my living room w couple of weeks ago. I had never seen one and I don’t particularly care to share a house with one.
The good news is my research indicates they are more solitary beings...so hopefully there are no others sharing a home with me.
