I see one of these frickers once or twice a week in my yard. I wish I knew where they’re living because I’d bomb the shite out of their nest or hive or whatever the hell their home is called.

When I saw Coyote get stung by one I thought they were only found in the south. Supposedly they are found everywhere in the US. I've never seen one in person.

No, but there was a thread yesterday that was about the pain different insects caused when the stung/bit.
cowkiller was listed and sounded like a painful SOB.
Good thread.
I see them every week in my yard. They don't bother me and I don't bother them.

Cow killers are actually wasps that don’t have wings.

A few weeks ago there was a female crawling around by my driveway. After I went inside I decided I should catch it to show my kid, but I couldn’t find it when I went back out.
A few days ago I saw a male flying around in the back yard. He was a newbie too - fluffy and red like the females (they lose their color later).
My brother got stung when we were around 9 or 10 yrs. old. Saw one on the trail and he found a small piece of paper laying around to “catch” it with - of course it took all of a second for it to crawl across the paper and sting his hand.
ETA: While that was a long time ago (around 40 urs.), I don’t remember anything out of the ordinary as far as his reaction - especially for being young. I remember him crying, but nothing overly dramatic or lengthy. From the reaction on the video posted, I would have thought my brother’s reaction would have been more memorable.

Never heard them called "cow killers". We always called them cow ants. I never knew why, but that makes sense now. Someone in the area I grew up in must have shortened it at some point.
Also, i had no clue they were wasps. That also makes more sense now seeing as how bad the little frickers hurt when they sting you. I just saw one on the loading dock at my shop last week and dealt with him with a quickness. frick those little bastards.

Actually saw one 2 weeks ago. Was the first ive seen in a long time. Either there aren't as many, or I don't look down enough

Are those the red velvet frickers that you can't squish with your foot? I have no idea how, but they won't flatten and die.
They scare me, but never been bitten by one.

Used to see them all the time on our farm as a kid. Had no clue they were wasps.

I’ve been seeing a bunch lately for some reason. If they get in concrete you can kill them.

Where do you live? I've never seen one before.

They hunt those huge Cicada Killer wasps. The cicada killer will burrow underground, and they like sandy soil. The Red Velvet/Cow Killer will use the larvae of the Cicada Killer to lay their own eggs.
The cicada killer looks scarier, but it’s that fuzzy black and red ant that is more dangerous.

Same here. I contribute it to I don't look under rocks for bugs near as much as I used to when I was younger lol

That link I posted shows a map of North America where they are found and it showed every state having them. Found that odd. But then again its really hard to kill them so I am sure weather doesn't bother them too much.

Yeah, I see them fairly regularly.
See them at the house every year. Pretty sure they eat cicadas and we have a bunch of those at our house.

I tried to kill one on the farm once. I tried smashing it, and it was largely unaffected. I then chopped it in half with a shovel. The top half just ran off. I picked up the lower half to inspect it further. It stung the shite out of my finger. It wasn't much different than a bee or wasp sting, other than being a little more painful since it was on my finger. My grandpa laughed his arse off as I cursed up a storm.

Guy lets himself get stung by cowkiller
wasnt there some tv show (youtube channel?) a couple years back where some fricking idiots put their hand into a glove full of these as some kind of 'coming of age' ritual and let them sting the frick out of their hand?
does someone remember what i'm talking about? not sure it was cow killers or just some other really big/nasty ant species.
