They really need to crack down on the assholes playing on their phones while driving.
If cops were actually proactive about fighting crime, instead of waiting on the side of the interstate for it to come to them, they’d quickly fill their ticket books
Drive around. You’ll find them easily, they're really easy to spot:
-slowly drifting into the lane next to them then jerking back into their own lane when they finally glance up from their phone
-constantly tapping on their brakes just in case the car in front of them slows down, but they can't be bothered to pull their eyes from the phone for long enough to see if in fact the car in front of them is slowing down
-driving slow in the left lane with a mile long line of cars behind them because they are too oblivious to realize they are fricking up everyone else's commute
I see at least 6 people a day on my daily drive playing on their phones on the interstate.

This law was a complete sham.
At least with the previous law cops could pull you over, but now you can cruise right alongside them while scrolling Facebook and they can’t do anything.
Additionally the law says you can’t get anything but a written warning until Jan 1, 26.

Agreed.
And whats worse is the fact that car manufacturers use a touch screen to control everything in the car. Which makes you take your eyes off the road to find the AC controls, etc. or flip between the radio, spotify, google maps, or whatever.
Where we used to have a damn knob on the dash that you knew where it was and could use it without looking down.

As for cause I think both would warrant the copy pulling you over. Once he has done that and if he saw you were on the phone at that point he can fine you for using the phone while driving. They can't pull you over just because they saw you on the phone.

No. Because I don’t have the need to hold my phone while driving.

Even messing with a phone at a red light while stopped is not a violation of the law, I don't believe.

Who looks at their phone when you have carplay and android auto?
and the Amazon Alexa car voice command Bluetooth thing that's like $60...
This is kind of a regressive thing that will snag mostly "poor" people with older cars, who probably also have other violations or warrants... as usual. But if they're a driving hazard nuisance, snag 'em.
Personally, I generally don't immediately jump for a text or even a call no matter what I'm doing. Drives my wife and people I know crazy, but there's nothing that can't wait a few minutes... I'm not a Doctor, so there's few emergencies I can do anything about and increasing the likelihood that I get distracted and cause a wreck, how ever small, is not helping anything, anyway.
I can remember a time when people used to thoughtfully drive over to deliver news of someone's death, to make sure the person being told was in a state to recieve it and then to be there for them if they were upset and needed to grieve. Now that stuff like this is sent instantly over texts of cell phone calls, to people who might be barrelling down a highway or something and let's face it, some people get hysterical over much less and lose their shite completely... is kind of terrifying.

I used to drive vans (thankfully)... I have been rear-ended by people playing with cell phones, people changing CDs and radio stations, people "trying to get the heater right," people eating, people reaching for another beer...
My wife and I were once on a road with steep ditches on both sides, and looking forward we both saw a guy in a pickup coming the other direction try to flick his cigarette ash out the window and the cherry of his cigarette flew into his lap... so he looked down and started frantically trying put it out... and veered into our lane about two car legths right in front of us... my wife screamed, luckily for me time seemed to slow down and I tried to figure out what to do while slamming on the brakes and keeping the car under control... put us into the ditch to our right, which would've probably injured us and damaged the car and put us trapped upside down and wedged in?... pull into the left lane, but I suspected he would look up and correct and he'd still hit us head on?... luckily he heard my tires screechuing and looked up, slammed his steering wheel to the right and missed us by probably half an inch, then almost went into the ditch on the other side, and was veering side to side down the road when I'd check my rear view mirror.
Another time at an intersection of of two 4 lane roads with turning lanes, I was waiting at the light to turn left. The minute I got the turn signal... I mean about 2 seconds after it changed, the a-hole behind me laid into his horn. I got pissed off and decded to just sit there for a few seconds because frick that jerk... then when I was about to actually get moving about 10 seconds later I hear a bunch of horns honking to my left.,, and I turn to see a guy in the closest lane driving while digging in the back seat of his car, not facing forward... just completely oblivious to the fact that he has a red light, and everybody he blows past (he was going pretty fast) that was in the lane to the left of him is honking to stop him from running the red light and killing somebody... I didn't move and started honking, the jerk behind me starting hoking for me to pull forward... the car to my right that was pulloing forward just then notices, I guess, and slams on its brakes... the guy is halfway through the intersection pretty much right in front of me, before he looks forward and locks up his brakes, missing the car to my right by inches. and skids through the intersection... then just goes on his way...
I enjoy driving. But I try to avoid it unless truly necessary, because people are idiots and odds are odds.

True, but texting and driving is likely a much bigger issue and almost EVERYONE does it and very few folks get shitfaced and drive.

I used to live in DeSoto parish less than a mile from Toledo Bend. I took a job doing collections for a Shreveport attorney downtown an hour drive away. Once or twice a week we would go in during the wee hours of the morning to be able to contact debtors overseas (do the same going in late to get the folks in later time zones too).
One time I pulled up to the then stop sign (light there now) behind the only other vehicle I saw before getting to the city. I had to blow the horn at the jackass as he was just sitting there talking on his phone at 4am.
I think it should be legal to open fire on cellphone users while they’re driving!!!
