I really think in these situations, it falls to the host or hostess to say something for the comfort of all the guests. It doesn't have to be rude. They could say ery nicely something like, "No politics or religion on Easter. Let's just enjoy our time together" for the benefit of all. And then if that request is ignored, another, more private chat can be had.

To be fair, you don’t need your masters for this.

You need it in Northern Virginia but I get your point.

Your discussion of teacher salaries excludes the fringe benefits like pension, health insurance and getting to sleep with the students.

My uncle is the crazy Bible beater. My aunt is rather annoyed with him. She wanted to say grace before the meal and just before she began, uncle says "can I blow the sheephorn before you say grace". She said "whatever uncle do whatever you want to do". So uncle started to talk for a second and aunt says "you said you were just going to blow the horn, just blow the horn". He went into a 2 minute sermon about why he's going to blow a sheephorn, proceeds to blow the sheephorn, and then my 5 year old nephew looks right at him and says "that's really annoying".

I really don't know the details nor dynamics here, but on first glance, from your description:

- your uncle sounds like he was trying to bring an important part of his religious belief(s) and/or momentos into an Easter Dinner... which seems a pretty decent thing to do.

- your aunt sounds like a real unsupportive bitch

- your nephew sounds like a disrespectful little shite

and it clearly made the meal and moment that everyone was previously enjoying uncomfortable

No teacher I know makes more than 40k a year at public schools

That's because leaders and citizens of Louisiana seem content with poverty wages for some reason.

Teachers make more in many other states.

Well, she went on a rant about how Academy is sexist. She went to the store and counted how many clearance racks were in the men's clothing section and how many were on the women's. there were more on the men's so of course...discrimination and sexism towards women. There is no way that any of this has something to do with the shopping habits of women.

I was at JCPenney last weekend. There were FOUR clearance racks in the big and tall men's section. In the "women's" section, there had to be 50. At least. I mean an entire section of the store was simply women's clearance.

So is JCP sexist/fatist against fat dudes?

Probably because the word "masters" triggers her.

Religion at family dinners is fine if everyone is of the same belief system. If not, it's just uncomfortable and bad manners.

I guess. I just think it's impolite conversation at big gatherings. I'd have no problem shutting it down for the comfort of all the guests. Some people can't read social cues and need someone else to tell them, nicely, to STFU. If you want to have uncomfortable religious discussions, host the dinner at your place next time.

I’m in Mississippi and I don’t know a teacher making under 40k.

My wife with a masters makes around 60.

The poor ol teacher salary is a ruse after you’ve been at it for a few years. The real money is being an assistant principal. You can clear 90k and not have any real responsibility. We have a friend who is one and she is in charge of testing. So a couple months a year she is pretty busy. But the rest of the time she makes sure the buses leave on time.

My brother went on a rant about how awful April Fool’s is and how anyone partaking is a terrible person. I was then asked to turn on a movie for the kids and chose The Sandlot. My brother then went on a rant about how it’s inappropriate for his 7-year-old and how he can’t watch it until he’s 10.

Rolled my eyes and bit my tongue a lot.
