Only thing I know about the place is Wright Patterson AFB......where they used to house the aliens

Amen to this. I actually lived in East Tennessee for a year and half. August was as bad or worse than any summer I have spent in south Louisiana. So Ohio may not be far enough north to be truly "comfortable" in the summer.

Go to Wayne county and furnish your condo with Amish furniture

Yep. I keep looking for a 2nd house in Traverse City, MI or something like that.
Anywhere on the Michigan Coast is terrific in the summer. Dayton OH is definitely not the Michigan coast. There are nice suburbs and neighborhoods but it's not exactly a glamourous place.
Perhaps consider Cinci, especially Kenwood, Hyde Park, Mt Lookout or Mt Adams. Or Columbus, lots of nice places in Upper Arlington.

Lived on Wright-Patt for 3 years about 20 years ago.
Agree with everyone about Centerville and Beavercreek being pretty good. I would also include Fairborn as well.
Like any city, there's cool things to do. There is a very good park system in the outlying areas.
The Air Force Museum is a must-see, worthy of multiple visits. It displays "Bock's Car", the B-29 that dropped the Nagasaki bomb, a B-36 that dominates the whole hangar, and the only remaining B-70 Valkyrie.
I enjoyed my time there. The people I hung out with off base were pretty solid. Can't say much about the nightlife, though, as I don't pub-crawl.
JMHO.

Yea, it’s legit hot as hell and very humid in the summer. Not Louisiana, but I think you’d be surprised.
Winter is grey w lots of freezing rain/ice, not so much powder.
Falls are nice, but short lived.

If you can pull the right strings, you might be able to get snuck into Hanger 13 at WPAFB for a brief visit with the Alien Space guy who lives there. He is a real hoot, loves Strawberry Ice cream. With you being a retired Doctor, they might sign you up for a spot on the Medical Alert Team. Would require one weekend of your time, maybe twice a year.
You would need to be willing to stand up to a background check. Any Military experience in your background? Do you have your DD:214? Vaccinations current? Can you play monopoly? Have you ever seen any of the old Dukes of Hazard TV shows? Ever read War and Peace?

Dayton is nice. The art museum is world class. Wright Patterson AFB is real close too. That's also an awesome museum. The have an SR-71 Blackbird and the SAM 26000 that was used from Kennedy all the way to Clinton.
However, there's always road work going on it seems.

I've lived there for 23 years.
Beavercreek, Bellbrook and Centerville are the places to be. Oakwood if you're a pretentious douche. I world stay away from dayton proper. If you do decide on dayton, east is better than west.

quote:. Yes but they are different for sure. Cincy suburbs are too close to cincy trash and cincy trash is some of the worst in the Midwest. At least in Dayton there is some distance.
You think Dayton suburbs are better than Cincy’s? Indian Hill, Montgomery, Mason, Terrace Park, Mariemont, West Chester, Symmes, Anderson…
Not to say as a city Dayton is better, because it’s far from cincy. But if I’m choosing a burb it’s gonna be bellbrook, springboro or centerville.

I have never lived there or Ohio for that matter but have travelled there for work numerous times and the one ajective that immediately popped in my head was "bleak". That may be a bit much but it was what I thought. I personally much prefer the Cincinati area but have never thought about it from the retirement POV.

Perhaps, but I’ve been there several times when it was 0 or close to zero. Not only that but to folks not accustomed to that kind of weather, anything below 20 might as well be 0
