My wife teaches AP Bio and the baseball team found a baby (eyes still closed) and they brought it to her. She has been taking care of it for a month or so.

Yep. Had one when I was somewhere around 12 years old (almost 60 years ago). Dad made a cage out of a big wire spool....like in the pic. Covered about 75% with hardware cloth and the rest with metal and hung it from a tree with the tin part facing up for rain coverage. He removed one of the board in the middle section and this is where the tree rat would hide out. Had him for 2-3 years and we finally turned him loose. Damn thing stayed around and loved to hang out in a large mulberry tree in the backyard.

Pure genius really.

Had the same exact set up. Pealed bark off some old firewood and nailed it to inside spool...like a tree trunk.
Thanks for the reminder. A good memory.

That is awesome. Thank you so much for the idea. The wife was asking me to build an outdoor nest. Perfect.

I’ve had red tails and flying squirrels. Most recently baby coons until they were about 8 months old

I had a few flying squirrels as pets growing up. They were young, but not eyes still closed young.

Yes and if you keep it for awhile and "set it loose"...it has no idea how to find food or build a nest or take care not to be preyed upon.

I raised two baby's that fell out my oak tree years ago. Once they got big they didn't want to be pets. They were bitey so I brought them to city park in a dense tree area and let them go. I had them a few months.

I have a couple that will come hang out with me on my back deck sometimes.
I've never held them or petted them, but I talk to them and they seem to enjoy that.

We had one when I was in middle school for maybe a year and a half. It fell out of one of our pecan trees during a hurricane and we rehabilitated it.
It was honestly mean as shite and bit everyone it could as much as it could. 0/10 would not recommend as a pet.

Yes, it fell out of a tree and we had to bottle raise it. It would tolerate people but didn’t desire attention or anything like that. We started letting it outside during the day. We would put food and water out for it during the day. The trips to the food tapered off pretty quickly and eventually we didn’t see it any more.
Mission accomplished!
