I think it's not so much the fear of dying as it is the feeling that one loses all control of the situation when they close the door of the jet, I think that also causes people to be bigger douche bags on a plane than they normally are

BTW: a couple of 'ludes, double shot of whiskey, and a joint does it for me

i had a huge fear of flying. I'm 32. Flew this past weekend and i was sick to my stomach the whole time. Eventually, i came to the point where i realized that the pilots are all assigned to their own plane. They know that plane. They have flown that plane a million times. They aren't going to do anything that would cause them to die. All dumb thoughts but i thought them all and i ended up being ok. I don;t know that i'll ever LOVE to fly, but it has at least become tolerable. Just take it one flight at a time. They get easier each time.

Flying helped me get over my fear of flying. Now actually flying in the plane is the easy part. The hassle is what all it takes to get there

You can go to any local liquor store and they have those mini bottles (Like they give you one the plane), those are allowed in your carry-on. Load up and get tanked.

Sounds like you need some of that low-T medicine. You gotta grab flying in the pussy.

This is true and can really be said of any anxiety.

That said, Xanax does really help. You'll still be nervous, but you probably just won't care.

Also, don't let your mind make it a bigger deal than it is. A week after it's over, it won't seem like such a big deal.

I'm sure it's a heights issue not a crashing issue

People keep saying this but I think it's a control issue as well. I hate fricking flying but it's because I am not controlling the plane like I do my own vehicle....and I am afraid of heights like a mother fricker!

Yeah. Go fly around in a Cessna on a windy day. Flying with the airlines after that will be a breeze.

You hit the nail on the head here. I take Xanax when I fly. It's not so much an irrational fear of flying or dying, it's the control aspect. Hell I get anxious when my fiancee drives, let alone when I am on a plane.

That said, those who have mentioned flying is the only way to get over the fear have a point as well. I have flown over 200 segments the last few years for work. I actually love every aspect of flying and airports except for security.

everyone dies

think of it like you would having surgery. not everyone makes it.

you can be real glad when you are still alive at the destination.

fear of death is what drives most people. you get to face it. most people pretend it never happens. everyone dies.

I understand the control thing but keep in mind, even when you are driving, you aren't in control of others' cars. They could wreck into you and there's nothing you can do about it.

I think the larger the plane the easier it is to relax so hopefully you'll be on a widebody intl flight. Also seems like my flights are smoother first thing in the morning but it may be because I'm sleeping through most of it.

Everyone else is posting crashes but google some images of stress testing of the wings. It's amazing how much has to happen to have a catastrophic event.

Valium. Combine it with one pre-flight drink.
