L5-S1 herniation here. Tried a bunch of stuff including traction and inversion.
Best thing I found was a good PT. Do lots of mobility and core work before going the injections/surgery route. I lift 5 days a week now without issue and work at a desk. Get a TENS unit for flare ups.

Inversion table has helped my back TREMENDOUSLY. Anyone having any back issues, I recommend at least trying it. I got mine off Amazon for about $120 and it’s a pretty solid machine.
I was lifting a bandsaw to get in the back of my truck and twisted my back to drag it into the bed. I was in pain for a week.
I had a flare up a few weeks ago. Stepped wrong getting in my boat (dang bifocals). I suffered with it on a heating pad and vibrating massager for 3 days. Ordered an inversion machine and got on it when it arrived. I haven’t had anymore pain at all.
I get on it for maybe 10-15 minutes every day.

I've had it done. Probably need to get it done again. I really need it done on my thoracic disc.

You need to get in front of this with physical therapy.
It’s a happy medium between good cyclical movement exercise and not being too sedentary.
Stay hydrated as I understand your disc get h20 based on diffusion.
Stay positive. It is hard when your back hurts. And the women just don’t understand.

Just to give you some idea...
- Microdiscectomy (where they shave off the part of your disc that's pushing the nerve) when I was 21.
- L4-L5 fusion that was doomed from the start when the surgeon pulled the hardware after adverse nerve readings at 27 (declared MMI - permanently disabled at 28 after never healing right.)
- L3-S1 fusion at 35 stabilized my spine but the damage was already beyond any better outcome than that.
Research your doctor and always go for the most conservative treatment with surgery of any kind being the absolute last resort. If surgery is the only option, I highly suggest a neurosurgeon over an orthopedic surgeon. Prepare your home to make your life easier/ reduce painful walks down stairs, reaching above your head for things, etc.

I don't get the downvotes. I've been using the same system with chiropractic and deep tissue massage to get me through and it's working. I know ALOT of people who've had surgery that saw no improvement in their condition or actually got worse.

Have had bulging discs for years. Shot of cortisone in my but helped tremendously with a depo medrol cortisone steroid dose pack. Try ice on ur lower back to reduce inflammation. NSAIDS like mobic or Celebrex helps as well. There are back exercises as well. Godspeed.

Not much worse than back pain. 2 back surgeries for me. Had a Blown disc and still fight a bulging disc when I overdo things.
Buy you a TENS unit to help with the sorness and tight muscles and ice packs as one poster above said will help a lot with the swelling.
Said a Prayer for you and good luck.

I also started putting my wallet and other items in my front pocket.
For any one.
Especially those who insist on a Constanza-sized wallet.
At least get the sumbitch out of your back pockets when you sit.
Cured me from my version of sciatica.

co-sign the wallet thing
take all your shite out of it, all you need is credit card and ID
keep in front pocket
I get a nerve burn on both sides every 18 months or so.
I will say that cannabis helps greatly

I had a disk issue I think in between that was causing issues with my Ulnar nerve from shoulder to elbow and causing numbness in my pinky and ring finger.
But I have fusion in c3/4 pinch in 5/6 and slight bulge in 6/7
Fusion was likely something I did a a kid. Possibly from falling off the old double slide at city park (BR) in late ‘70s

Herniated disc since college; sciatica off and on. Will never go away. You’re fricked.

Yeah. For Laura I went over for about a week and unloading a generator back in Metairie my back “tweaked” badly but I kind of just shook it off. Couple of days later I was helping a buddy bring down a water heater from his attic and I felt that bitch go out.
Yikes. Ruptured a disc.
Thought it was a pulled muscle so I rested and iced. Didn’t do shite.
Couldn’t work bad. So I went and got the X-ray pain pills and I did PT.
Yoga has helped a ton. Losing weight helped. A new firm mattress helped and honestly marijuana helped.
There’s specific strains with anti-inflammatory benefits that did wonders for my sleep honestly. Before that I had to sleep in specific positions. Now if it’s my back is stiff or my sciatica flares up- I’ll either drop a little on my tongue or smoke some. I find the edibles to be more psychedelic and less enjoyable.
Best of luck to you but if can for sure be helped with regular stretching and getting yourself to an appropriate weight.

If your issue is truly a bulging disc, go to Amazon and buy the book “Treat Your Own Back” by Robin McKenzie. It will walk you through a progression of prone exercises that should help you.

Forgot to mention this for me as well. SSRI’s can also help some people substantially.

I had 7 herniated. Fused 4 so down to 3. Shots, ablation, regular massages and meds keep me going

Yes, had L4 and L5 discectomy surgery about 10 years ago. One of the best decisions of my life

Upper back but chiropractor solved it and walking helps keep it aligned. the nerves to my right arm were pinched bigtime. I could not raise my arm level with my shoulder. Doctors wanted to operated so I went to a chiropractor who fixed it without surgery.
Lower back has had issues in the past as well and since then. Walking helps keep that aligned as well.
