I'm looking at buying an F150 (low mileage '12 or '13 KR or Platinum), and most of the listings I've come across the last few months have been the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. The V8s seem to be few and far between while the EBs seem plentiful. Any OT F150 owners out there with experience, goof or bad, with the Ecoboost? I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how it's supposed to rival the V8 in HP and towing capacity, but I'm not a gearhead, either.

You won't regret the 3.5 V6

Plenty of info and YouTube videos out there comparing it to the V8

That's probably a sign. Just like how the only thing left in the candy dish is always the butterscotch discs.

I had the ecoboost in a SHO, and now in an F150. Good engine

Rival? It beats in HP, torque, and towing for those years. I have a 2015 and have been impressed with it so far.

You're looking at the premium trims so they're more inclined to have the more expensive engine. I have no numbers to actually back that up though.

I bought a F150 in Aug 2014 with the ecoboost (iceboats LOL - thanks autocorrect) - first non V-8 i'd ever bought.

There is no wanting for power - the 'eco' part is a bit oversold however - I average 16.7 mpg when not towing anything and pretty much staying within speed limits.

Towed a popup camper on vacation in 2014 and got 12+ mpg.

I have the Platinum package with the 4wd and super cab (5ft bed) = it's a pretty big vehicle.

Is it a 14 or a 15? I'm curious because I get 19.7 with a platinum fx4 with the max tow package.

There's a great video by Town and Country Ford in Alabama both comparing 2014 models (Lariat v. Platinum v. Limited) and discussing at a high level the differences in engines.

I see a lot of EBs on the roads and in parking lots around town nowadays, and it looks like Ford is pushing the F150 in that direction almost comprehensively.

You won't regret the ecoboost. Mom has a 2016 explorer sport ecoboost, it's the 3.5 awd. they're pretty fricking quick. They have videos of them on youtube running 12 second 1/4 miles which is nuts. Wouldn't choose the 5.0 over it for sure. Mileage isn't crazy good with either btw so don't expect the fact that it's a v6 fool you, it still sucks gas like a v8

They're stupid easy to add power to also. Livernois has a tuner out that will add around 90 hp and 125 ft/tq. And no, those aren't mistypes. They're tuned down super bad from the factory.

That's what I have - 2104.

Do you have the '15 with the new aluminum frame?

The only way I can approach 20mpg is to drive 55.

Here is the answer you have been looking for. The Ecoboost has problems with valves tapping near 80K miles. Many ford owners have had problems with these smaller ecoboost engines. I personally have a 2010 f150 with the 5,4 liter engine. I had a 1999 f150 with the 5.4 liter Triton for for almost 11 years when I traded it in for my current one. Get the V8 and forget about the gas mileage savings. You can google forums discussing the issues with the ecoboost engines.
My brother-in-law has the econoost less than 3 years and traded it in this year on a damn GMC. Said his valves starting knocking so loud with only 83K miles on it. Got rid of it before he threw a rod.

It's pretty simple. It's just a smaller engine with turbochargers

If you trade every 3-5 years get an EcoBoost. If plan to hang on to it and drive it till the wheels fall off get the 5.0. 5.0 is a less technical engine and is easier to repair. Turbos are expensive.

Have a 2012 king ranch ecoboost with 55k miles. No issues to date. Don't buy it for the gas mileage. It's not substantial to note. Buy it for the power. It waxes v8's on the road and has superb HP
