SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - A bill that would allow darker window tinting on cars is headed to the governor’s desk.

On May 28, 2025 Louisiana HB119, presented by Representative Daryl Deshotel, was passed in the Louisiana Senate by a vote of 38 to 0. The bill now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

This would allow for darker-tinted windows. Specifically, the legislation reduces the minimum light transmission for window tinting on front windows from 40% to 25%.

Pointless to move it from 40% to 25% as the only % in the middle is 35. That combined with your factory glass vlt of ~70% you’re at 25% (or slightly under) with 35% film.

35% isn’t shite, so what was the point of this?

When I read the subject line I immediately thought of Ross Geller.

I love how mathematical people get all of a sudden when it’s about really important things like automotive glass tint. I’m just waiting for someone to bust out an Euler Lagrange analysis.

With new ceramic tint, darker doesn't keep more heat out. It's just for looks.

Wouldn’t the factory glass vlt (whatever that is) of 70% be included in the old 40%? I seriously don’t know what I’m talking about with window tinting, but you make it seem like it’s only a 5% difference instead of the 15%.

Agreed. Which is why the state should allow clear windshield tint, too.

They won’t, but it’s a pain in the arse for inspection stickers.

I'm at 5% now, because it just looks dumb for the back windows to be darker than the front.

Drivers with window tint think we can’t see the white trash through the tinted windows

Making tint illegal in the south should be a crime instead.
