in terms of personal responsibility (not government mandate), the rational choice is to wear a mask

if masks were costly, then there would be an argument. that is the crucial variable

I've already had Covid and recovered. Should I wear a mask? (I do, BTW)

No one argues that mask stop an individual COVID particle.

They do, however, help reduce the amount of droplets coming from your mouth that the COVID particles travel on.

The HR guy who works at a rice mill 20 miles down the road from me has shut down the rice mill from July 1st - August 1st as a precaution. My buddy who is a miller there has told me he's been a real hardass about shaming people for going on vacations, seeing friends and family. Out of the 50+ people who work at that rice mill, only 1 person has covid... can you guess who? The fricking HR guy.

I haven't seen any dependable data that proves masks are effective. I have also seen the spread of the virus seems to be more rampant in areas where mask wearing is more prevalent. It seems like more of a symbol to me.

It was definitely a shibboleth, and now it's been forced mainstream.

The "data show" (to speak pseudoscienceese) overwhelmingly that this spreads PRIMARILY from symptomatic people in close proximity for an extended period. And, wearing a mask--we're told--is to prevent the wearer from spreading the disease (unless proper N95 and other PPE in hospital setting). So, if you wear an ordinary mask in public, you're really just communicating that you're sick or retarded (well, before we were forced to do so).

Also, the overarching issue is, we should be quarantining sick people and reverse-quarantining (sheltering) vulnerable people. Unless there's a TRUE (as in, not manufactured) threat of overwhelmed ICUs, then we shouldn't be "slowing the spread" in the abstract. It's a facially absurd concept that was never the stated goal, until we needed another thing to stop OMB.

I know a young teacher who has been crying about masks and her fear of returning to the classroom... as she takes her 7th vacation this summer in Mexico without a mask in sight.

I understand people not wanting to wear a mask for multiple reasons, one of which is because there isn’t solid evidence that they work.

But the thing is, if we don’t know if they work, but there is a possibility it does and could potentially save lives and make this virus go away faster, why not just wear a mask?

I think there are some negatives to wearing masks, such as giving people a false sense of security and people touching their faces more often when fooling with it, but overall it probably is a net benefit. At the very least, just wear it on the chance that it reduces the chances of spreading the virus.

Sure did. I'm not hamstringing my immune system by masking up for a virus that I have a 99%+ chance of surviving. And F a mask in Louisiana humidity anyway.

I don't think many people are "anti-mask". We're just anti-government mandate that tramples all over personal freedom. If you want to wear a mask, fine. If you don't want to wear a mask, it should be fine. If a private business wants to require masks for all customers entering their business, that should be their right. If the customer refuses to put on a mask and won't leave the store when asked, call the police for trespassing. If a customer decides not to shop at a particular business because of a store requiring a mask and take their business elsewhere, fine. Some of us just prefer that businesses and individuals have freedom to make decisions for themselves

The virus is smaller than the openings of virtually all masks. Pretty simple.

I do, however, wear a mask if the place I'm going to requires it. Because I still need to buy things.

Chemical Engineer with minor in Microbiology. Why don't you tell me the size of a virus and the size particle a mask will filter? Not an N95 mask but that crap you put on your face. Would you like to go a bit deeper into microbiology.

Because they are ridiculous, people aren’t wearing them correctly or even ones that do anything. You maskers are hilariously stupid and yes, I have a degree.
