One question…..what the frick is “gain of function” research?
Actually, the article is kind of stating the obvious as far as I am concerned. It basically says in order to do research on infectious diseases, the researchers run a slight risk of catching the disease.

Slight risk of unknowingly catching the virus and then unknowingly start a local spread which eventually ends up spreading throughout the entire world, killing millions upon millions of people in the process. It's frowned upon.

Gain-of-function is where you modify the virus to make it (potentially) more dangerous than it was before. The purpose of this research is so scientists can see how previously unknown viruses might attack the human body. This way they will know how to treat it or even have a vaccine for it should a virus like the one they are doing gain-of-function research on ever crops up in the general population.

It is a virus that is literally FROM CHINA. The Poli board and other conservative forums have been talking about the joint virology lab in Wuhan since the beginning, and were derided as conspiracy theorists. Fauci may be a narcissistic a-hole, but it was China that either accidentally or intentionally leaked the virus.
Trump learned of the joint-venture after the fact; can’t pin this one on him, but you can pin it on Obama if that’s the game we want to play.

As bad as this is what is even worse is the democrat party purposely helping the virus spread throughout America for political purposes. Remember Nancy Pelosi walking the streets with that Chinese woman and saying Trump was racist for wanting to ban travel from China? Or the NY governor purposely spreading it to nursing homes and murdering thousands of older Americans?

Easiest explanation I have is this:
Let's say I have a virus now that can affect dogs, but not cats. So this virus has a "function" of affecting dogs.
A virologist tries to figure out a way to mutate or alter this dog virus to see how it can affect cats, too. If successful, the virologist has been able to "gain" a new "function", or new ability, to affect another species.
The premise is to "get ahead" of the virus mutations and learn a way to stop it before it naturally mutates and affects other species.

What is the crime? There is no crime being alleged. If this is all true he made a judgement that the chances that the gain of function studies could cure diseases outweighed the remote chance of a pandemic. Turns out he lost the gamble, but that’s not a crime.

I'm certain we all witnessed the bizarre exaltation of Fauci at the beginning of the pandemic. They were giddy over him and unusually happy and playful about him at a time when they were also painting such a glum picture of America and the world as a whole. Telling us that life as we knew it was finished. That we'd be lucky if our parents and grandparents made it through alive.
Yet there was Fauci being praised and lauded on show after show. They were cheerful about him. Bottom line was that it was ALL to force Trump's hand in terms of keeping Fauci around for the long haul. Very premeditated in that regard.
