He was a bit douchey, but you have to consider the time he was around. Chain restaurants and shitty food were still quite big back then. It's not like today where food has become trendy and even average folks prioritize quality local food.

Should we be taking advice from a guy who killed himself? The cream sauce didn't help him apparently.
If you read his books or interviews, he's extremely honest about being a fundamentally fricked up person. He would talk about how he missed, and needed, the structure of being in the kitchen. That he felt unmoored without it. Ultimately, I think he was dealing with a significant fraud complex at the end, that he was a world famous "travel and food personality", yet he wasn't happy, because he could never truly hack it as an elite chef. And again, he was honest about the latter point, all the way back when he wrote Kitchen Confidential, which was before he blew up.

He was far from perfect but he inspired a lot of people to get out of their comfort zones and explore different places and cultures and I for one liked the way he did it. He drank whatever they put in front of him, ate whatever they put in front of him, and for the most part he listened instead of making it about him. His show was more gritty than most travel/food shows. The Congo episode where he cooked on a boat by generator light and killed the chicken himself hit pretty hard. He wasn’t scared to get down and dirty in 3rd world countries.
Pussy beat him, but everyone loves to point out the negatives and the bad in people and have a hot take of why someone isn’t what everybody thinks, this board is the worst at it. He was a great writer and cool dude that brought an edginess to travel. He had a ton of demons that he battled most his life that he admitted to.

That's not something everyone should aspire to do.
I'm not sure that "inspiring people to travel/eat/experience life outside of their comfort zones" is necessarily analogous to narcotics, but frick it, yolo

I think we as a society have started to crab bucket, hard. Hell, you see it with athletes who go from hero to hated on here if they take a single political stance people disagree with. People love to rip others down from their pedestals.

He was a chef - so douchey and awesome at the same time.

I think you have to compare his personality and suicide to his life to put things in context.
This dude got paid a lot of money to travel all over the world and eat interesting food while being adored by everyone he dealt with. If THAT lifestyle makes you act douchey and then kill yourself then there is something truly rotten in your brain.

Mostly awesome but kind of a douche too.

He was kinda snobby for an ex heroin junkie 40 year old line cook who got famous from his book.
I did enjoy his shoes too. Sort of like a Jermey Clarkson type. A straight a-hole but enjoyable to watch.

Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a Negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride."
I don’t really see the issue with this quote.

I would argue that he wasn't actually snobby; he was brutally judgmental. And for the record, I'm not saying that's a good quality. I just don't necessarily consider them to be synonymous.

If you are someone who enjoys traveling, trying new things, and enjoys some of the simpler aspects of food Bourdain was awesome. He always admitted her was pretentious when it came to certain things but I would bet most chefs are he just talked about it. He battled addiction constantly and was a flawed complicated person.

I never liked the dude... never understood the fawning over him after he off-ed himself. The content he covered was ok, his personality brought it down though.
If we ever meet, I hope it is in mortal combat.
