Prominent BBQ spot north of Houston.

You walk up to the counter to order.

They hand you a cup where you fill up and refill your own drinks.

You walk up to a second counter area to pick up your food.

You clear your own table and put your tray on a slot above the garbage can.

They wipe the table after you leave.

What part of that experience is tip worthy, and what % tip would be justified?

The food was delicious, as always.

It’s just the POS system. Don’t leave a tip. It won’t bite you or anything.

Depends on how hot the girl taking your order is.

Because the food was good. I tipped a Taco Bell employee yesterday because they were standing outside in the heat taking orders. They didn’t ask, I just did it.

Sounds like there was some service involved, but it was minimal. I typically would leave no tip at a place like that. Sometimes I would throw a dollar on the table on the way out, because I am not a cheap arse.

I over-tip for good/great service.

You scenario would result in no tip from me.

Fast service, I always tip. I utilize a lot of food trucks/carts.

Don't mind paying young people who want to work and are hustling. At least they are giving effort, which is remarkable today, evidently.

The Texanist took on this topic in a recent column. He said he tips 20% or 25% at counter service BBQ joints.

Too much for counter service. I often kick in a couple dollars at those places, but it's not really a tip for their service (because there was none). It's just a donation given out of pity for a less fortunate working schlub.

I do hit the 20% button for counter service at one favorite place. The lady who works there has been great to us for years and always goes above and beyond.

That makes sense, as they were busting their arse in the heat trying to hurry up your lunch.

The tipping “suggestions” at lower scale restaurants are meant to take advantage of good people - or at least people who care about how they appear before others. I recently have found a sense of freedom in pressing “No Tip” when the screen pops up.

Situations like these are an automatic NO TIP from me.

Ice cream joint down the road from me asks for a tip amount on the iPad screen up to and over 20% lol.

Unbelievable.

See how good that place is if they can’t get workers because the minimum wage these guys get paid isn’t enough to entice workers to come out.

I remember during Covid when many of the fast food type places were closed or under staffed. It was hard to grab lunch.
When I was able to get something I appreciated the people coming out who could have stayed home.
I tipped. I continue to tip now because I have come to appreciate the fast food workers more.

I HATE when they take your order and flip the screen around after paying $15 for a sandwich.
