Wtf is this shite? common core frickery? Kids today need to learn math the old way, by memorization and multiplication tables.

I hate the "new math" but I remember this from last year when my twins were in 1st grade.
They want them for whatever reason to add 4+4+1=9
Their reason is the double facts are memorized making it easier for the kids to add.

Why the hell is 6 + 3 easier to compute than 4 + 5?
Posted on 9/29/16 at 2:47 pm to Rouge
I remember hearing a lady from the school board on the radio saying that 9's are scary.

So, 4 + 5 = 9
Well done. I actually like most common core principles for math, but this is ridiculous. Proving that 4+5=9 by having you solve 6+3=9 is absurd. You're not breaking down a complex number; it's 4+5 for frick's sake.

I don't see how that makes sense considering the arrows.

So 4 + 5 = 9

Because Mrs B___ drilled it into our heads and if we got it wrong, she whopped us. She had lost all the fingers on one hand in a lawnmower accident, and she liked to hit you upside the head with the nubs. High school football coaches and Drill Sergeants held no terrors for me after surviving Mrs B____'s homeroom.

I bet that made it more difficult to count.

It's the doubles +/- 1 technique
4+5
4+4+1
8+1
Nothing difficult or challenging about that representation....very effective and has been around for decades.

4 + 4 + 1
8 + 1 = 9
So 4 + 5 = 9
8 + 1 = 9
So 4 + 5 = 9

Not so sure about that answer.
It looks like it should be 1+1+4+2+1=9
The lines show that the sum of the second and third number should equal 5 and that the fourth number should equal the sum of the first two numbers.

That makes sense too.

8+1=9

breaking out the five into 2+2+1 where the arrows are
The entire problem is just idiotic.
