Is there an equals sign omitted from the pic on the second row? Otherwise the addition continues to the third

the arrow point to the sum of those two numbers

But that's not a god damn arrow. It's a line that splits. Honestly it could mean anything for all I know. I could put 2.66+2.33. It still equals 5. How about you draw an arrow next time for me to know what you're remotely talking about.

Jesus Christ. What a bunch of shite.

I have no idea what the hell is going on here. Is this the nonsense they teach kids nowadays?

It breaks down simple math to make much harder math easier.

Say you were doing 458+935 in your head

You could do 400+50+8+900+30+5
then 1300+80+13
then 1380+10+3
1393

It's something to teach you how do add larger numbers in your head and it also prepares you for the new style of learning multiplication as well.

I support overhauling our education system. However, common core is not the answer.

I don't disagree at all, but there needs to be a base of facts to go along with those methods. Forcing methods for those basic facts (instead of using the facts to illustrate for example) is my issue.

4+5 = 9. Kids should be able to just spit that out. And kids should be taught to break that down and show how it got there. Both.

This will come naturally as you move along, along with basic multiplication, as long as a child is reasonable intelligent.

Why do you always act like this in math threads without offering anything constructive

I did "offer something constructive"...I couldn't have made it more clear what the intent of the problem was.

...and it isn't my fault people don't understand the difference between a standard and a methodology.
