Seems American boat motors can’t compete with the Japanese brands. This only leaves Mercury as the only American boat motor.

Mercury uses Tohatsu powerheads for a lot of their engines IIRC, they aren't really an american motor.

BRP (the owner of Evinrude) is a Canadian company. The motors are made in Wisconsin, if I recall correctly.

Friend,

If great, great grandfather were still alive this news would break his heart. He loved his Evinrude which he got at the old Higgins Industries building before they turned their focus to building boats for the war effort.

It makes sense. Now that people know that fishing spreads covid, sales are down. This is the new normal

My dad tells a story of how he was hitchhiking back to college in '74 and the owner of Evinrude picked him up in his limo for the last leg.

What my friend told me who use to work for them until he saw the writing on the wall.
- small engines 2008 time period give or take a few years or so they went to China to mfg smaller HP engines.
- Then after that was not profitable went to Tohastsu to have them build the smaller Hp units.
No real profit which is what a company expects.

Larger units they had a hard time competing with the Yamaha’s, Suzuki, and Mercury’s of the word which is where your profit is.

Some bombardier dealers did not stock alot of product as it was hard to find mechanics to work on the engines as they were more technical.

A lot of times they cost more than other brands.

Decent product Bombardier did not fix everything else around it to help make the product line profitable.

What made Yamaha grow fast when they came into the market they were the least expensive engine to repower your boat with. Then they offered dealer incentives to get dealers to want to push the engine into the market place.

Any motor that you have to mix oil is never going to compete with the yamaha’s and merc’s. Never was a fan of evinrude motors.

Evinrude in its last iteration wasn’t American. BRP is a Canadian company.

Isn't your HIV medication made overseas, though? What if they cut you off?

In the )60sand the 70s all we ran was Evinrudes and Johnson’s.

I still have my 1964 6 hp Johnson and 1973 25 hp Johnson.
Both have many, many miles on them.

And they both still run

I have a 25 year old Johnson 3.3. It's been beaten, battered and left in storage for years at a time. Still starts with one pull.
