re: Amtrak announces the “Mardi Gras Line” will soon run between NOLA and Mobile

From what I’ve been told, Mobile dug in hard at wanting to be the end of the line, at least for now. I think that would be likely to change in the future.
There was a New Orleans to Jacksonville line that Katrina killed. This will likely ultimately end up being extended to the old NOLA-JAX line.

They should do one between NO and Houston. Stops in BR, Lafayette. That’s much more economically feasible than this.
Plenty of things to do in both cities.
The only interesting city on this line is NO.

I hate driving in Atlanta traffic so much that I will sometimes take Amtrak from Greenville (or Clemson) to there. It’s usually under $40, not crowded (and can sit in the diner car and work). Takes about the same amount of time as driving, factoring in the inevitable traffic snarls.
My main complaint is the state of shite hole stations. Third world.

What do you do when you reach the either end of the route besides a potentially expensive Uber and Lyft?
Why would an uber or Lyft be “expensive” relative to the airport?
The stations in both cities are actually closer to hotels than the respective airports

Friends and family members of the respective mayors of these cities finna EAT.
This thing will drag on 10 years and cost triple whatever their initial budget is, and most will go to start up shell companies.

I know the OT likes to shite on passenger rail but this will be a net positive for both cities.
NOUPT is in a prime location right next to the Superdome and within walking distance of the FQ. This service will bring in folks on/near the Gulf Coast who don't want to deal with the hassle of parking in NOLA. A win for the tourism industry there.
My only concern with this route is CSX's willingness to cooperate with dispatching as there has been a lot of back-and-forth between them and Amtrak especially around the yard in Mobile.
I take the Crescent train down to/from NOLA all the time from Atlanta and I much prefer it over driving or flying into MSY.

Eh, if you’re not in a hurry I’d take a 5 hour train ride over a 3 hour car drive. Much more space to move around, go to the restroom, bar and dining car. But I personally hate driving, especially long distances.
100% agreed.
Would love if we had more of these connecting big cities but this country is YUGE.
We arent soft and small like the Europeans.

…until the next major hurricane destroys the rail again.

The CSX traffic is the big issue. Purely anecdotal, knew someone that took the train from Pensacola to New Orleans early 2000s, pre Katrina, was supposed to leave Pensacola mid-morning and get to New Orleans mid-afternoon (nearly 6 hours vs a 3 hour drive), train was delayed and didn't leave Pensacola until just after noon and they didn't arrive in New Orleans until around 1 AM.

Incoming Panama to Destin to orange beach route
wonder how this fare compares to the American cruise line
I could see a fun cruise of New Orleans to key west

BSL is about to have a boom.
The ninnies over here think thugs from NOLA will take the train over to rob us then ride it back home. lol. Pretty funny.

I would be down to take a train to Biloxi Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, catch a concert at the Hard Rock and train back on Sunday.
But is there parking anywhere near the train station in NOLA where I will be able to return to a car with all the windows intact?
And will there be a bar car on the train? Because that's the only advantage over driving. If I can enjoy a cocktain on the way, we are talking. If it's just a shitty rendition of an airline seat with nothing to do on the train, forget it.

That sounds like a great route - I really hope Amtrak (or someone) can resurrect the idea of train travel, and this really does look perfect. Of course, the implementation might end up totally FUBAR, but at least they're trying.
And I bet you could pay a week's worth of federal debt with the pennies all the baws are going to put on the tracks for the first run.

Nope. NOUPT doesn't have parking. You'd have to park in a nearby parking deck.

Yes, that's one of the best perks of the train. You can also BYOB.

This route's trains won't have sleeper cars or diners in their consists. It'll likely just be 4 Amfleet 1 coaches, maybe one business class car, and one cafe/lounge with a bar and tables.
Amtrak is actually experiencing a major passenger car shortage at the moment, since their fleet of 70 1980's Bombardier Horizon coaches had to be sidelined due to rotting A-frames... and the rumor is, permanently. So who knows what we'll see. The service itself could even be delayed because of it.
(I'm a train nerd, if you couldn't tell)
