this is a low income/class way to look at it.

why is getting some help after graduating college or getting married worse than getting it all when they die and the kid (now 45+) presumably already has some real assets.

eta: if i had a kid right now, my parents would probably offer to pay for private school. it would be idiotic to not take them up on that.

But then you won't be a real man staking his own way in the wilderness like our friend, Roger.

You're right about it being a low income/class way of viewing the world. So many lower middle/lower class whites in particular are unable to make generational advances because of this view.

Men do take pride in being self sufficient.

Its something you will never be able to understand due to terrible parenting.

Meanwhile these marginally employed local yokels get free daycare, family help, etc. I made the right decisions to be able to afford this. I took career risks, worked hard, etc. Meanwhile, some get it handed to them. Just no wherewithal or drive. It's definitely a character flaw of mine I struggle with

Same here. Worked my tail off in school. Still work my tail off working 2 jobs so we don’t sweat over taking a vacation or paying bills. Parents helped a little with apartment rent in grad school. Still had to take out loans to pay for school, utilities, food, car ins etc.

This is why I get pissed over white privilege. Have to bust my arse for everything

This is why I get livid about this white privilege bull shite

It sure struck a nerve..

Getting put on third base is a great thing, but the dudes who started off at home plate and are successful, are better than you.

My two vehicles plus umbrella are $440 a month in good ole loosyana.

Try moving to Alabama. Loosyana is literally the worst state for car insurance. My bill got cut by 2/3 when I got out of that place. You know why??? Cause this is the s*** that happens in Louisiana. My last car. Parked on the side of the road. Hit so hard it was flipped sideways and shoved 30' into the street. Do you think NOPD solved this one??? NOPE.

We bought a house in 2020, prices were rock bottom, interest rate 2.8%. Could probably swing a house that is 300k+ but we wouldn’t be taking any big vacations. Not sure how 300-350k houses are still flying off the market and people still taking vacations, because I know we aren’t poor and it would be tough for us to do

Similar situation as you. Six figure income, bought my house 10 years ago for sub-$200k, refi'ed in 2020 at 2.8.

There are neighborhoods popping up everywhere with houses in the mid-300s and they are flying off the market. Not even nice houses, all DSLD stuff close enough together to high five your neighbor in his kitchen. Who's actually buying this stuff? I guess I'm spoiled with my small manageable mortgage payment because I sure as shite can't see doubling it for what's out there now.

My father passed away when I was young, and I was raised by a single mother who was a public school teacher in Louisiana. I didn't even start off at home plate. I started in the dugout.

I also worked hard, didn't drown my sorrows in alcohol and drugs, didn't run off to Alaska to get away from by problems, and didn't let other men sleep with my wife.

Again, if you're the epitome of manhood, I'll pass.

There's nothing decent here for under 500k, except condos. We generally lag behind indicators, will be a while before prices drop.

I sold a condo last spring, will buy land and build a cabin when things settle.

Took this photo last Friday in my local grocery store here in Beirut Rouge. No one is going to pay that price for mayo.
I bought the Blue Plate brand for $4 and I thought that was too high .

This is not sustainable.

I have no idea how people are affording to live in a McMansion with a new F250, and new Tahoe, and a new bass boat. That guy probably has $5k a month just in house/car/boat notes. I guess two incomes each over 100k, but frick how many people out there are clearing 6 figures these days?

Credit, which was too cheap for too long. Created a massive bubble that has to be dealt with at some point.

What an odd take for you to have considering your political views. Reddit leftist psychos are usually the ones poopooing on parents that help their children.

What is so wrong with a parent paying for college so that their child doesn’t set out into the world indebted to the government? Or buying a car so they’re not paying hundreds in a wasteful car note?

Many folks worked their asses off just to be able to give this very sort of thing to their children. My dad worked 30 years in a shift work job he absolutely despised to be able to do two things: (a) retire early, which he did at 52, and (b) set my brother and I up for success as much as possible. We both have good jobs today, and neither have a single dime of debt holding us back from saving for our own retirements and to be able to pass our own wealth down later.

Poopooing on that completely blows my mind, especially coming from someone who identifies so much as an anti-government, anti-materials/debt type of man. A stable family setting up their children to be able to continue the cycle for generations is something to celebrate. It doesn’t yield spoiled assholes if you raise them right.

Even here in Pearl River County MS I bought our home in 2018 for $275k now homes in the neighborhood are going for upper 300’s to mid $400’s it’s nuts. Houses are sitting a bit longer but still moving. Even raw land has skyrocketed I bought acreage for $1875 an acre similar land going for $3000/acre just 5 yrs later. My paycheck damn sure hasn’t increased by those percentages in the same time frame.

I'm not "poo pooing" parents helping children. See my child care position.

Stuff will start to change with the interest rates where they are at.

I wouldn’t have built the house I built 2 years ago at todays interest rates. I locked in at 2.65% and my mortgage is $2450.

Everything in department or grocery stores here are 50%-100% higher than three years ago.

Inflation peaked at over 10% in 1980. Its higher locally than that right now, easily.

Covid cash, cheap interest created a monster.
