That sound you heard is all the amazon delivery drivers quitting at once.

More local businesses getting screwed while mega-corps get bigger. Citizens cheer the demise because they BRIEFLY get lower prices.

I think everything should have a direct-to-consumer option

Competition will still exist between manufacturers so pricing will still have to be competitive

Many dealerships are large mega-corps

That's going to be a big box on your front porch.

And make for an entertaining watch when the porch pirates strike

Would love to see it happen. Make purchase online, show up to sign paperwork and take delivery.

For the most part, a lot of dealerships perfected that when they were having problems keeping cars on the lot. I bought my car through e-mail and "owned it" before it was off the truck. Salesperson gave me a list of what was coming in and still available. I made a decision via e-mail, but did drive to a dealership to see an older model with the same colors. Put down $500 refundable deposit. Car dropped off by truck, back office did their thing, I went there did a test drive, signed some paperwork, then drove it home. Left the lot with 11 miles on it, and I put on 7 of those.

Sweet. Can't wait for them to get into real estate too.

Amazon is going to have a robot in each house monitoring and ordering around the occupants like a Sims game soon at this rate.

Now if we can only get rid of worthless real estate agents. Wish Elon would bust into that industry.

Knowing Amazon this is nothing more online vehicle advertising like you see at Cars.com and other sites, but exploiting the huge advantage that Amazon has with online search.

Amazon will likely promote third-party lenders and demand a "sellers fee" from dealers, driving down dealer profits and driving up their costs.

I don't see how this won't phase out local dealerships over time.
I refuse to buy a car before I can test drive the actual vehicle I'm buying.

God I hope so. One of the most useless fixtures of the modern world.

No matter how you slice it no dealerships means fewer support jobs. Not just fewer salesman

This is not how economics works. The supply of maintenance shops at dealers decreases it creates opportunities for independent shops. The demand for service is unchanged so the supply will just shift in providers.

You guys are missing the point about the manufacturers having service centers in major cities.

Sure out of warranty work would still be done in a small local mechanic shop but warranty work will likely require you to drive to the next city over vs going down the road to the local dealership.

Wouldn't a local shop just get approved to do work on certain brands of cars?

I have a goodyear store near my home that does all the work you go to a dealership for. I could see someone like them being licensed to do Ford vehicles.

Would be a good alternative to dealerships. Besides location because dealerships always seem to be in the sticks, the store does good and honest work.

We started selling on Amazon this year as well as Walmart.com and people absolutely abuse Amazon returns.
