Amazon returns

I returned an item to Amazon, it was a truck bed cover that did not fit correctly for $230.00. It's been 7 days since they received the item and they are telling me it will take 30 days for the refund to be issued. In the past I've received my refunds within 3 days. Is this their new policy? Calling and trying to talk to someone is almost impossible as they have apparently outsourced calls to a place that barely speaks English and hard to understand what they're saying.

I think it depends on who processed the order originally. If I have something fulfilled through Amazon when I drop it off I get the refund immediately.
If it’s through a store, it takes forever. I had a disaster with a $350 watch. Took like 90 days to get my money back and the only reason I got it is because I had all the receipts and tracking of when and where was sent

That's BS. They always give you worst case scenarios so they look good when it's faster.

Sounds like you had a third party order. I had some Amazon gift cards that didn't get delivered on time and got them refunded immediately when I contacted them yesterday. They ended up arriving today and all but one was still activated. Score!

Every time I’ve had to return something to Amazon they refunded me immediately and told me to just keep it?

Larger items/more expensive items sometimes can take 30-45 days for them to issue your refund. Calling them to expedite it or issue it earlier will do nothing for you as they have no control over it.
May be closer to the 45 days with it being Christmas time...

If it's Amazon it's instant when the return hits, if a 3rd party it takes longer.

You bought a truck bed on amazon and then returned it?

It’s weird. Some items they want returned. Some they say keep it. Doesn’t depend on cost or size.

They have gone to shite.
Had a purchase that was “undeliverable”. Couldn’t cancel and expected me to wait until they found it (likely stolen or never existed).
Had another item that changed delivery date to a month out after order. Can’t cancel, even though it hasn’t shipped. Read this is a scam where a seller builds up orders then actually orders how many they need (never keeping inventory).

I returned two items a couple of hours ago and one has been refunded to my amazon account.

I rarely return anything, but when I do I just drop it off at the local UPS store. They scan the return QR code and Amazon issues a refund as soon as that happens.
I've had 2 instances in the past few months where Amazon told me they never received the return that the UPS store scanned and clearly received to ship back to Amazon. Amazon has tried to charge me in both cases, requiring me to contact them which is quite the chore. I ended up not having to pay for either, but it is a royal pain in the arse to get resolved.
I suspect the employees of my local UPS store had a VERY good Christmas this year.

I will ONLY order things that are shipped and sold by or fulfilled by Amazon.
Buying from 3rd party sellers is a crap shoot

Was it ordered through a third-party seller on Amazon?
They can create their own return policy if so but Amazon will not allow them to make you wait 30 days. If you want to be a pain to that seller you can file an A to Z claim since its already been 7 days. That seller will get a hit on their performance metrics and will be motivated to refund you ASAP as they have to resolve it quickly or risk losing their seller account for bad customer service.

Im a 3rd party seller on Amazon and I do not pull the stunts other sellers do. Amazon is cracking down and banning accounts with poor metrics. They also have added new metrics to track performance and will not give those performing poorly the buy box if they somehow do not get banned.
The Amazon seller forms have threads daily of sellers that have been selling for years getting banned. It really picked up this last quarter.

Use the chat function. It works better than getting on the phone, and if you do have to get on the phone you already got through the first level people that don't do anything other than do what you can do online yourself and they will call you.

Third party returns will take 2-4 weeks. I returned an Amazon sourced item last week and the refund was made within a couple of hours.

Larger items go to get checked before your refund is issued. Your “7 days” also included time they were likely off for Christmas. It should have also told you the 30 days when you clicked to return it. Other times it will say your refund will be issued “when they receive the item.”
Go to your account and click the refund status button and it will give you a timeline that will look something like this
