Am I seeing something that’s there or just what I want to see?

When it comes to potential relationships, how do you tell the difference between when there might be something there and you just seeing what you want to see? I’m in a weird relationship limbo with a girl, but I’m also asking in a much broader sense. When you are evaluating a situation that seems unusual, how do you determine if your interpretation of vague signals is accurate or just reading what you want into a situation?
