Once they reach 3.5 feet their survivability goes way way up.
At that point their only real predator is other alligators. Maybe a large male otter is in the mix.

There has long been NO NEED to release the 3.5 footers back into the wild.
And they keep on doing it. Estimates I've seen are that there are between 2-2.5 million alligators in Louisiana. That's probably more than when the white man got here.

The found the 11 foot gator, and killed it.
Well, that gator can easily weigh in excess of 400 lbs. and can go upwards depending on conditions it's living under.
Her husband had no chance of getting that gator off his wife without a gun to kill it outright.
I know I'd have a hard time living with myself if I saw my wife killed and torn apart by such an animal.

My wife and I met a couple from Spain who had taken a canoe trip with their two kids to see gators.

My son and I did a long canoe trip at the Okeefenokee several years ago. The main canal (about 50 yards wide) that starts at the state park went about 2 miles before we turned off a side trail. As far down the canal as I could see were gators heads moseying from one side to the other. We would get to about 10-15 yards distance when they would go under. We went over one that thrashed right beside the boat and scared the shite out of us. We were glad to get off the big water and onto the secondary trails.

Kind of weird that gator attacked her.

I've wondered what the pop of gators were when the Indians were in their hayday.
An 8ft gator would make a heck of a meal but not the easiest to kill and capture. Wonder if they had any special hunting methods.

This is why I only kayak/canoe in saltwater.
The biggest gator I have ever seen was in Empire while kayak fishing for trout/redfish...don't let that salt water thing fool you.

Husband said it was a freak “accident”.

Good luck with that. I’d stick with freshwater.
Yeah F saltwater. I’ll take my chances with alligators any day over sharks. Very rare for an alligator to come for you. Usually they’re gone as soon as they hear something big splashing around. Sharks on the other hand…I feel like it’s the opposite behavior.

Woman: See ya later, alligator!
Gator: Maybe. Maybe not. *grins

Louisiana alligators are docile. Florida alligators not so much.
