All this inheritance talk has me curious, fill all the cup equally? Or fill it the same?

My BILs family scenario:

If 1 sibling does significantly better in career vs others, as a parent do you split the inheritance equally or bring everyone to the same level?

Ex:

1000
50
20

Bring everyone to 1000? Or give everyone 500?

Give it all to the good kid and tell the losers to pull themselves up by their bootstraps

The best thing to do and most non-controversial is to divide it equally amongst the kids.

Believe it or not that’s their plan. They said the other kids can’t afford to manage their estate and have to trust the older brothers.

I could definitely see one of my sisters trying to get more than the rest of us. Not happening!

Whoever wipes my arse when I can’t.

Put me in nursing home and it goes to charity

Not a nonprofit, stripper named charity

My son would blow it all in 6 months. And have zero to show for it.

My daughter will build upon it and live off the interest

I’ve already told her to be prepared to get it all and take care of her brother.

But wouldn’t that sever the relationship between your kids

Your posting pattern suggests that you are overly obsessed with money. I've known several people with this affliction and no matter how much they get, they never have enough.

He would hate it worse being homeless. Which is what he would be in about 6 months.

Unless one of my kids has a meaningful disadvantage like a disability or illness, I'm going to split it evenly.

Put his equal share in a trust for him with her (or someone neutral) as the trustee. This is what my FIL has done for my wife and SIL. SIL is insane, and it'll be a PITA for my wife, but more legally sound than just giving it all to her with vague instructions to take care of her sister.

Only real option is equally.

It is each individual’s job to manage their own situation.

Skip a generation and give it to the grand kids.

The only time you don't have a sibling fighting for more inheritance is when you have no siblings. I had an uncle who thought he deserved an equal share of the liquid assets and 100% of the house because he "moved in to help them out." Nah, dog, you moved in because your wife threw you out and divorced you when you got arrested for smoking crack.

Or if they aren't assholes. I have a large family on both sides and none of my aunts/uncles fought over any inheritance from my grandparents (which was a decent amount but nothing crazy).

I'm one of 4 and would be stunned if me and my siblings were fighting over an inheritance when our parents pass.

Just depends on what you think should happen to you money. Some believe equal division is best....some want their money to do the greatest good....no rules.
