Why the hell are people moving to a shite hole like Atlanta?? That place should be losing population rapidly, not gaining it.

Other than jobs, opportunity, higher wages, relatively low cost of living, relatively low crime rate compared to comparable cities, excellent health care, excellent education, one of the highest quality of living ratings in the US, mild winters, bearable summers, rare natural disasters, regional hub of commerce and worldwide hub of transportation, opportunity to attend world class events and cultural doings there really is no explicable reason anyone would want to live in Atlanta. Why anyone would want to live in what is the Capital of the South Eastern United States is mystifying....

This is wild. Place has to be the most small town feeling 1 million metro I’ve ever seen. That’s not even a put down. Place just feels a lot more small town than like half the places listed there. It’s a lovely little city, though.

It is a great area...is under attack by folks from up north though. Probably will weather the attack better than Charleston has.....

Is that true? Granted I haven’t lived there in 30 years, but I always thought Mandeville, Covington, and Slidell considered themselves part of New Orleans?
Living in Mandeville now it feels completely separate at this point with all the wiork from home and such. I rarely find people anymore that cross the bridge for anything

And nobody from here would ever say they are from New Orleans like Jefferson parish people would at times

very weird that they counted Ham/Man/Cov/Slidell as its own “city” on that list .
quote:

21) Slidell-Mandeville-Covington, LA (183rd) - 275,583 +4.16%
41) Hammond, LA (302nd) - 138,064 +3.69%

They counted Hammond, America separately from St Tammany brah.

Put together (which rationally they should be) these two areas would rank at #14 between Lafayette & Mobile.

Agree, it is way different now thsn say 10-20 years ago.

We go to NOLA to eat or visit every now &then, but there isn't much ot a reason otherwise.

I don't really believe crime is down, despite recent reports, I think people have just given up calling NOPD.

In 30 years Atlanta and Athens will be basically one metro area. In another 100 it will include Greenville and Charlotte

Atlanta and Athens are basically that way now honestly. Atlanta Metro stretches to Barrow County/Winder which is 30 minutes from Athens. And Barrow borders both Athens-Clarke and Oconee Counties which are Athens Metro.

And I give it 50 for the 85 corridor.

This is based on 2020 data, which makes sense I doubt many people were commuting with COVID. In the next update I’m sure St. Tammany will be part of the New Orleans MSA again.

I agree with this b/c while the poster you were replying to made a good point- it doesn’t change the fact that Mande/Cov isn’t just A suburb of New Orleans- it is in fact THE suburb of New Orleans , and nothing else (Destrehan, Laplace, Chalmette) comes close .

I know my hometown of Augusta and the surrounding area has grown quite a lot in recent decades but I'm still a little surprised at it being in the top ten.

Sorry. Atlanta is widely known as one of America’s worst shite holes. You couldn’t pay me to live there. All the same problems as New Orleans but on a bigger and wider scale.

Atlanta is widely known as the Capital of the Empire State of the south....or the little apple.

New Orleans is widely known as the best managed city in the Caribbean. Comparing Atlanta to New Orleans is akin to comparing Sweden to Somalia.

Atlanta annually ranks as one the most visited cities in the US by foreign travelers. There are more visitors in Atlanta, from the southeast, on any given weekend, than there are in New Orleans in any given week. I know there has always been a deep rivalry between Atlanta and New Orleans but comparing the 2 post-civil war is ludicrous. Atlanta is an actual city, New Orleans is not. Birmingham or Montgomery are more comparable to New Orleans than Atlanta is.

Atlanta is my hometown. For the first 30 or so years of my life. I wouldn't live in Atlanta today if you gave me Buckhead. Its just waaaayyyyyyy too much to take. I get that. A major city is not for everyone....it ain't for me. If I were in my early 20s, starting life, Atlanta would be my choice every time over anywhere in the US....and there are a heaping pile of such people through middle age across the region and the US who agree. Atlanta is growing, New Orleans is shrinking....the issues related with each are major points of diversion between the 2. Some part of Atlanta's growth is the result of life long residents of New Orleans moving to Atlanta. The reverse is simply not happening.

And the population of the city limits has actually gentrified, greatly, the last 15 years.

Just 100% false .

Go to an LSU football game in Green Bay or at the Rose Bowl or almost anywhere else outside the South, i 100% promise you i hear people all the time who live in Mandeville or Slidell say they are from New Orleans…. I mean, i get it, for convenience sake- but don’t claim it does not happen b/c it does and probably always will .

And soon to turn GA blue forever.

Sorry to say and its going to cause a bunch of folks to catch the vapors but as Atlanta goes so does Georgia and as Georgia goes so does the rest of the Southeast. Atlanta is the capital of the Southeast in any measurable metric that matters. What happens in Atlanta eventually makes its way to the less enlightened parts of the south....and has since the late 19th century.

maybe if Nola wasn’t separated from those by damn near open ocean, they would be counted.

Maybe we just know different people, but everyone I know and work with from the Northshore says they live in New Orleans when we’re talking to outsiders.

ETA: I’m not saying it’s a good or bad thing. It just makes sense to me. If I tell an outsider I live in Old Metairie then I’ve gotta go into conversation about where that is. New Orleans is just easier.

Easily, just through birth. I guess they included Henry County in Atl Metro, but would be crazy to see their growth numbers. Damn near criminal how awful McDonough and it's suburbs have become.
