Alarm company charges $35 a month for service
Insurance company charges $35 for house without alarm

You actually lose nothing either way.

I came here to post this.

My alarm contract costs more than my insurance savings. So I’m not sure why OP is bent out of shape.

Why in the hell does the alarm company have your homeowner's insurance info?

Just to be clear: You are angry that your alarm company won't be chill about you attempting to commit fraud? Does that sum it up right?

Thats what i was thinking.

Tell them that you already notified progressive that you no longer have the alarm. They dont know who you have or when you switch

Are you talking like a couple bucks a month? Seriously, this was worth the time it took to post this? You seem like a bitch.

We had to have the alarm company send our agent a certificate once we had the service set up. They didn't know who my carrier was because I use an independent agent, but I'm sure they had on file who my agent was at the time.

This was way back in 2002 or 2003 when the system was tied into our phone lines. We haven't had an active alarm system since then. We switched carriers a couple of years ago and the questionnaire asked if we had an alarm and I marked that I didn't. Never heard from them about requiring one.

Alarm companies usually send you the certificate. You send it to your insurance company (you are the one shopping and changing insurance)

There is no reason for an alarm company to have your insurance information.

I don't know, but I suspect any discount you get on your service is less that what you're paying for the alarm monitoring.

While some here aren't wrong I feel like they are missing the point.

Yes the alarm company is scum for basically trying to blackmail you.

Our alarm system got struck by lightning years ago, and the company told us they had to notify our insurance when we refused to replace it.

Not sure if they ever did, but we never heard from our insurance carrier nor saw any increase in rates.I felt at the time it was extortion from the alarm company.

So,
IF you are not being monitored but are still getting the discount,
and
IF you suffer and type of loss (fire, theft, etc) or even possibly just make a homeowners claim of any kind, the insurance company can and many times will contact your alarm company themselves to ask for a current certificate of monitoring. They even do this sometimes just to update their records even if there is no claim at all.
IF this were to happen, you would be billed for all alarm monitoring discounts you received since you can document (through the alarm company) from when you stopped paying for monitoring. No doubt about that part.
and
IF your lapse in coverage has been extensive (years) they may also choose to cancel your homeowners as well.

Get a blink system that you self monitor.

Not good enough. Self monitoring is a joke. Do you really think an insurance commpany is going to recognize "alarm monitoring" as you getting an alert on your phone and taking the appropriate measures? What if you are at a ball game and dont hear the alert? Or sleeping, or at the beach and on and on....
The insurance company is going to want a certificate from a reputable monitoring serivce.

So, by your own admission, you get the alarm for free because the discount offsets the cost, but you're pissed because they won't let you scam the insurace company on the discount if you cancel the service.

That about right, shitbag?

FTR: A majority of the discounts for alarm system don't come close to paying the cost of the service. Very few companies or situations does the discount add up to much. If it does, it's probably time to re-shop your insurance anyways.

My monitoring cost is 300/year. State farm insurance discount for the alarm...411/year.

Yep, I would simply tell them I'm switching companies. If they tell, you lose the discount. Oh well, stop trying to cheat insurance companies and you don't have to worry.
