I am guessing Hoover's school district is governed by the Alabama state govt?
Correct. All of which are subordinate to federal law.
ETA: The state gives the local school district authority to manage the district.

What case are you referring to that gives school districts authority to limit off site speech?
Not Tinker I hope.

It's been a while, but start with Bell v. Itawamba County School Board, 2015

Just having seen posts of the recording content, one might infer what the female said as being threatening language.

They just had a bunch of white kids from Newport Beach line up beer pong cups into a swastika while doing the Nazi salute
The alcoholocaust is not a symbol of racism. It is simply a WW2 reenactment... Unless the Nazis win.

These kids probably don’t have any idea why they are making anti-Semitic remarks. I guarantee you they have no understand of why traditionally, people discriminate against them.

If you read the decision by the 5th circuit in Bell, you can see that they ruled against him because of his threats to school administrators, talking about getting his Ruger and using it against the teachers. AFAIK, the students made no threats against teachers here.
Also, this case never made it to the Supreme Court & Hoover is subject to the 11th Court, not the 5th, so theres no way that decision would apply atm.

Heres a good link about some other cases floating out there...

In January 2014, Reid Sagehorn, a student at Rogers High School in Minnesota, jokingly tweeted “actually yeah” in response to a question about whether he had made out with one of his high school teachers.
The public school, acting on the tweet, suspended him for seven weeks. Sagehorn, a member of the National Honor Society, fought the suspension in a federal court, claiming the actions of school officials violated his First Amendment right to free speech.
Did the school have the right to punish him for his off-campus expression? It turns out – no.
In August 2015, a federal judge rejected the school officials’ motion to have the case dismissed. After all, the court found that Sagehorn made the post while away from campus, during nonschool hours, without using the school’s computers. And last month Sagehorn collected a settlement of more than US$400,000.

are you black? odds are ALL of those students have at least one black teacher... it's a crappy situation all around for everyone I hate it that it's going to be a huge headache & distraction for the school
I am black. I do agree that it is a terrible situation. This type of thing will not blow over for the school easily at all. Even if students in the school move past the issue. The public and the media is involved now, so that escalate everything.

The kids I knew in high school that said shite like this did so because they were racist assholes. People trying to explain the behavior away by essentially claiming "teens say the darnest things" is a little ridiculous.

A video showing Alabama high school students drinking and using racist slurs at an off-campus gathering surfaced on social media over the weekend.
In the video, shared on Facebook and other platforms, a group of white students are going back and forth talking about the Holocaust, about Jewish people, and about African-Americans, using the n-word multiple times in a derogatory manner.
"F--- n------'s, f--- Jews," one boy says.
“Jews are fine because they’re white,” a girl says. “We just need the n----'s gone.”
Let's be real.. this is unfortunately common in the south

The underage drinking is the only thing illegal but the media doesn’t care about that
