Yeah. Covid price spikes.

We were looking at a small place in Sea Isle for $280k….boom. $455k

Fucm

I’ll wait until prices (if ever) get sane again.

True but the canal home gig with boat lift is nice. Especially at Sea Isle with a decent marina…..

We’re not beachside types. Not in Gtown.

You’ll have a nice time if you’re not planning to sit on the beach. Stay at one of the two hotels I mentioned and eat/drink around the Strand.

We’ll probably spend one day at water park and the next day moody’s and then head to Houston to finish the weekends. Any rec for sweet treats around the strand?

Can’t recommend bakeries but I’d suggest the following restaurants:

The Fancy
Sugar and Rye (excellent brunch)
Pier 6
Hearsay on the Strand
Rudy and Paco

Grab drinks before dinner at the Tremont Hotel rooftop bar.

Other than The Spot, Hearsay, and the country bar downtown, there ain’t much reason to go to Galveston

I feel like in a beach town you want short term rentals.

It drives the economy to have those houses full for spring break and the summer.

If it’s someone’s second home, they might not be there every week.

Ike Dike??

If so maybe they put it out it’s misery and/or announced a hiring freeze for Corp in or around Galveston, but funding issues are not really new.
quote:

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has estimated the Galveston storm surge project could cost up to $57 billion alone. The plan was originally hatched in 2008 after Hurricane Ike devastated the island. The project was authorized by Congress in 2022 but has continuously failed to secure federal funding that would advance the project.

…In 2023, the Ike Dike project was projected to cost an estimated $57 billion and take 20 years to construct, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is leading the initiative. Congress authorized the project in 2022 but has yet to dedicate any significant funding for it. Federal lawmakers denied a $100 million funding request in 2023 by U.S. Rep. Randy Weber of Galveston.

It got approved but not funded. I think feds were to cover 65%. I think it finally got about $500,000 allocated from feds in 2024 which a very small drop in a large bucket. Texas is still working on its share. Amount of funding was over 20 years not up front, but it hasn’t seemed like all are on board the plan being successful before DOGE was a thing.

I've only been to Rosemary and on the actual beach and water it doesn't get much better.
for the USA, this all the way.

Best for me ever? The Bahamas, Exumas , Great Guana Cay. Blows the redneck Rivera out the water. Sapphire blue water, talc powder soft and white sand. But, way harder to get to and more expensive.

Did Galveston pass a local law that doesn't allow AirBNB's? Whats the back story....

AirBNB's CEO is buddies with Musk and recently joined DOGE. So it's a bunch of butthurt Democrats doing their "resisting."

Most upper middle class Houstonians opt for the 10 hour drive to Destin or 8 hour drive to Gulf Shores over the 45 minute drive to Galveston. That tells you a lot. I go down a couple times a year with a girl in the Summer. It's cool for a day trip. Go down around noon, come back at 6. No reason to stay the night and do multiple days there though.

surprised you didn't get any bites. Just downvotes. I'd 100% take what you have in texas over what we have here. Abysmal state. Can't wait to leave. Wifes job has us tied down tho sadly.

Depends on the island. I'm not disclosing the gem we go to. Agree tho Bahamas > Alabama and most of Florida.

Only been to Antigua in the Caribbean but much better than 30a. Price points may be comparable at current rates.

I love the Yucatán. Easy 2+ hour flight from Houston. Just stay away from the AIs and large resorts. We get a condo down there just about every year at this point. Cheaper than 30a for sure
