That's a little misleading IMO. Using AI as a tool is not near the same as having AI write an entire system for you or not being able to function in your role without AI. AI is not perfect either. It can and does spit out code that doesn't actually work.

This. AI can produce a lot of garbage and it takes some skill to get useful stuff out of it.

Agreed.

AI is writing code that’s been written before to do tasks that have been optimized in code for some time.

I write code almost everyday. There are few to zero AI programs that are writing ‘new’ code to solve a problem that hasn’t already been solved.

Companies that sell AI tools say that they can do things!

Holy shite!

Yep! My Dad said years ago that some point all these tech jobs wouldn’t be worth having and there would be a huge need of tradesmen. It appears he was right again!

It's going to be the biggest job killer in history,
When I told people this a few years ago they rolled their eyes,
They offshored all of the manufacturing jobs with NAFTA, now they are going to destroy the white collar jobs with AI.

We had a procurement manager come on at our plant and he was a big proponent of using AI tools to help him create reports and KPIs.
But it's just like an Engineer needs to understand the math that the software does for them in the real world. Without a solid fundamental base in database design and SQL programming skills, AI won't get you across the finish line with any degree of data integrity or accuracy.
He ended up sending his all of his ai-generated SQL to us(Sys analysts with 20 yrs in mfg IT) for "optimization" before it could be presented to upper management and board meetings.

Give it another 6 months to a year and let us know how it's going.

Yeah but i learned on here that i should learn to code.

AI doing that now better than people?

It's similar to AI in that knowing HOW to ask the question is just as important as the question at hand.

True in most technical or engineering disciplines, phrasing the question correctly is as important as the answer. Sometimes there's nuance that a human can infer. I don't always know the answer but usually know the question, and whom to ask.

Great comment especially on remotely working Indian engineers or designers based in their home country.

Huge growing field right now. AI data centers are popping up everywhere.

The job market has slowed due to tech companies scaling back.

The AI tools being used to help develop software these days is pretty shite

Yeah they could replace the code monkey that took a two week course I guess. But those guys were pretty useless.

Nobody took people who took coding boot camps that serious.

Modern coding AI is nothing like people think it is. It just combs the Internet and tries to infer the answer based on things found on websites like stack overflow.

Unfortunately the majority of that data is very simple and can't solve custom complex problems that most software developers have to solve everyday.

We are not even in the realm where these AI models can take complex software requirements for custom solutions and generate any type of answer.

And we never will be, because there is no way to monetize it easily

Its also killing the “coding boot camps” that were promoted as an affordable alternative to college.

Coding bootcamps were dying long before AI took off.
