Me too, I have a property that I would make the assessor buy asap at his valuation if I could. Then I would take him out to dinner in appreciation of getting rid of it.

That was the system in ancient Rome. You set the value of your property, but the government or private individual could tender that amount to you and take it. So, tax rolls increased because people did not want to lose their stuff.

i have long argued that if the gov't appraises a property at a certain value, they should have to buy it at that value if you ask them to.
our property taxes went up 50% last year. frickING 50%.

Thank Obama and his dumbass healthcare, my insurance has gone up 400% in 3 yrs while my salary has risen by 3.4%.
But hey at least Shofunktra can afford to have her 5th illegitimate child.

They'll make you bend over in other ways. I feel the OP's pain though. Every year whenever I think I'm finally getting ahead, I realize by the end of the year or beginning of the next year I've taken two steps backward.

Someone who is related to me by marriage, owns a trailer parker. The property, which holds 12-14 spots for a trailer or RV is under homestead exemption. When I worked for the local government, I had a friend who worked in the assessor's office. I would have to go try to locate owners for abandoned properties so when I would go down to the assessor's office, we would end up looking at how much certain people paid in property taxes. One guy, who owns a lot of land and is from a wealthy family... He was paying less property taxes than people who had an acre of land.
It was as if at one time the assessor just set a price depending on the person/family then at one point they just started to put in the appropriate tax percentage... And everyone's property tax before that, was grandfathered. You hold a lot of power when you can dictate how much someone has to pay on property taxes..

I think this has been the biggest problem for the working class. Food, insurance , etc.. prices have skyrocketed over the last 10 years while wages have barely moved.

My wife doesnt understand health insurance at all. We have an HSA with a really low premium but a high deductible. She wants to switch bc of the deductible and doesnt understand that would just be offset with a much higher premium.

It doesn't matter which one you have if you end up needing healthcare for something substantial, you're going to pay!!
I need orthoscopic surgery and about to start shopping around for the treatment and I'm very afraid of what I'm going to learn about how much this is going to cost me.

No thanks. County Appraised values in Texas are always below market. The fact is market values are skyrocketing everywhere.

The more I think about it and look at how much taxes I'm paying out of my paycheck along with the rising cost of health care and everything else, the more I want to join you in saying to hell with all this shite. Life was so much easier when I was a broke arse college student living off of $1 Whoppers and Big Macs.
