We camp on my wife's land near Carville pretty often and we've met a bunch of paddlers who come through on their way down. Canoes, kayaks, Huck Finn-style rafts, and DIY houseboats. You usually see a lot of them coming through late in the summer. All of them have been very nice and really interesting to talk with, though almost all of them are just a little different in the head. It takes a certain kind of person to spend months camping on the side of the river. We usually trade beer/food for stories. We've heard it all from being shot at to week long psychedelic binges to almost dying and being pulled out by ACOE boats. Somewhere out there we're on a documentary shot by one of the paddlers about his journey.

I'd like to float the river at some point in my life. I almost did it a while back and wished I'd followed through. With a wife, kids, and running a business, the time availability is just not there like it used to be.

Good on this guy for going out on his own terms. I'd have liked to hear a story or two from this guy. He probably has an outlook on life different from mine and could share some new points of view to me.

Whoa. I saw that from my office downtown and thought it was an RV that got stuck on the batture and caught in the rising river. Then I was running on the levee last weekend and saw it is indeed a houseboat with a little outboard and I took this pic. Saw his flatboat on the levee too.

He’s been moored by the Old Point Bar for about a week now. Godspeed and prayers for a peaceful remaining time on this earth. Better than any hospice!

Looks like he needs someone to donate a bilge pump and battree. Story reads like he was an owner but the guy looks like he has lived a hard life. Props to him for going out like a Boss instead of a beotch.

and if he doesnt die by the time he gets to Venice, he can just go to one of the local bars and look at someone the wrong way. They'll finish him off for sure.

Ok, just realized...

He thought if anything, the Mississippi River might be a good place to go. So, with his brother’s help he bought “Shameless,” a houseboat built in 1972.

Is there any way to get a daily update on where he is docked beyond today? I travel back and forth to Venice a couple of times a month, including this weekend. I would love to buy the guy a beer and check on him and his dog.

Everybody got to die. Phillips is going out on his own terms. Sailing off into forever with his dog. I like that.
