I generally don't have a problem with them but the down escalators at ATL airport are long and steep and not friendly with roller board luggage.
I almost killed myself in the Orlando airport doing that

Why would someone freak out?
Because every year at least a few people get eaten alive by the gears inside.
This is why NSFW

Escalator Story No. 1
In law school, roommate and I are at a department store when a little kid ends up by himself on the escalator, and he falls down. Roommate did a quick rescue that involved going the wrong way on the escalator.
Escalator Story No. 2
There was (and maybe is) an escalator in downtown Houston with angled mirrored surfaces along the bottom. A perv could get a free show if he was on the stairs beneath a hot woman in a short skirt going up the elevator.
Escalator Story 2(a)
They canned a Shreveport security guard for browsing up women's skirts as they rode up an escalator with polished brass angled bases. They also changed to a non-reflective base.
The "base" is the angled part on each side of the stairs. Example:

Hey, when I couldnt walk and had to drag my legs by a walker, escalators were a huge deal. My dad would have to take my walker as I latched on to the escalator and he'd run down the stairs and have the walker waiting for me to throw my self at to catch.

Actually every year in NYC at least a few people are killed when the elevator unexpectedly closed or drops without the door closing.
Shear forces are powerful and not friendly to human flesh/bones.

This is my fear when getting off of one. At that point the escalator becomes a trap from a Saw movie.

I don't freak out but sometimes I find myself thinking about how I'm about to move my feet so that I don't take a face dive.

I'm more cautious getting off after an escalator in Vegas, I believe the Mirage, bit off part off my left heel on my shoe then the next day took a chomp out of my right heel/shoe.

I've never been able to look at an escalator the same way since the escalator scene in the movie The Kiss.

In this age of technology, how have they not figured out how to make the handrail match the speed of the escalator.

If you stand still on the escalator you deserve to be shot.

Honestly, stepping on is more freaky, stepping off doesn't bother me.
