quote:

An area businessman is looking to open a Johnny’s Pizza on Hooper Road near the Baton Rouge Metro Airport because he believes the north Baton Rouge area is “up and coming” and has limited competition.

Up and coming? Assuming he is already approved for his small business loan, who's he kidding? He shouldn't have to continue to impress the bank.

Limited competition, well that part, he got it right.

I do admire his courageousness, desire and commitment because if he is able to pull this off, the local community will stand by him.

But I think labor, work ethic or lack thereof, higher than normal food costs and potential theft (free food, cash, etc.) will be harder to overcome, especially if he (the owner) is not involved with the business on a day-to-day basis. A "cash less" environment, while some will say it is "racist" may actually prove beneficial for everyone involved here from a safety and security standpoint.

quote:

The pizzeria will have a buffet and will also stay open relatively late at night, a feature Harper says is currently missing from restaurants in the area.

Uh oh.

quote:

The new pizzeria comes as Southern Grind Cofé sets up shop on Swan and Scotland avenues, right off Scenic Highway. Owner Horatio Isadore says he, too, was drawn to north Baton Rouge due to its high growth potential.

This is equivalent to investing in penny stocks. The off chance you pick one that one day will explode (amazon, apple, siri, etc.) well then you look like a genius and get a huge return on profit.

But, more times than not, you may make some but actually lose money.

How will it NOT do well right there? With Airport, Hotels, Southern University, and Coca Cola plant all within 2 miles.

I know we all think Gary is a retard but other food places around there do well.
Their buffet will be an instant hit.

Yeah I remember I had friends that worked at pluckers and delivered for some pizza places and they didn't have to deliver in Gardere if they didn't want to because drivers would get robbed.

We can mock this owner all we want (he probably deserves it for opening a late night, all you can eat restaurant in a high crime area) but truthfully this is how you make an area better. Private people invest in an area, hopefully the local population will take responsibility for and care of the business and attract other businesses.

This is how I want it to happen at least as opposed to tax dollars going to studies and buddies and nothing ever getting better. This one may at least have a shot of improving the area

If I was the businessman I would hold an open casting call for co-owners and managers. You would find some good people.

That business would be black-owned and a part of the community.

It’s false that businesses can’t succeed there.
