Prior posters are correct. The dermatologist has no way to know what drug is covered by your insurance. (Generic solodyn 45mg is 189 a month at Walmart - not sure of the dose your kid is on)
Call your dermatologist and ask to swap to a cheaper drug. Since doxy and solodyne are nearly the same drug (accutane is much different) they probably won’t care.
Also the Goodrx app is very helpful if you are paying cash.
That being said, the dermatologist should have a clue about cost. There are several orthos in BR who keep writing Duexis. Cheapest price is >2500.00 a month. It is literally ibuprofen and Pepcid in one pill.
The scam is that the drug company will reimburse you for your copay. Got a 5000$ copay? No problem. Get the Rx, after 2 months, the pharmacy company has paid your copay, then they get to keep 25,000 a year for some ibuprofen and Pepcid put together.
That will bankrupt any insurance company. Not sure how this gets approved or is legal.

I'm not suggesting any waiting period. I'm suggesting scientists do not yet understand the side effects. I agree lots of people take the drug and seem to be fine. But, while I don't have a study in hand, I can tell you this is a strong drug with bad outcomes for some. It was pulled from the market in 2009, and generics are available today, I believe. See below.
Accutane and Depression
Roche responded to the reports of depression and suicide in 1998, by adding a warning to the medication’s label. The warning stated that Accutane could cause psychiatric disorders.
?Before 2005, reports of depression and suicide linked to the use of Accutane accounted for the fourth-highest number of adverse reactions occurring in the U.S.
?Researchers still don’t understand how Accutane causes psychiatric events. Definitive proof of an association between depression and Accutane is still lacking.
A study published in June 2017 concluded that there may not be an association between Accutane and depression at all.
The study was a meta-analysis, or evidence-based examination, of published literature. It included all literature regarding the relationship between isotretinoin and depression from its inception up to Sept. 30, 2016. It did not review randomized controlled trials.
Results showed no apparent association between isotretinoin and an increased risk for depression. The study showed treating acne could actually reduce symptoms of depression in patients.

My point is accutane is just a big risk. The downside outweighs the upside far more than is justified. I'm happy for all those who were helped by accutane without being injured. But one bad outcome is unnecessary.

My point is it isn't. But regardless of how may studies show otherwise, people will always be put off. THe most comprehensive analysis of data in the UK has concluded that there is no apparent causal relationship between isotretinoin but an apparent link between an acne diagnosis and depression. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-acne-depression-risk/new-acne-diagnoses-linked-to-increased-depression-risk

If that is the criteria, then there are a lot of medication people should avoid.

It’d be way cheaper if he just altered his diet a bit

And suicide attempts are high among people with severe acne. It affects a person in numerous ways. What kind of job they can get, who their friends are, if they go out in social settings, etc. /accutane for most people that have to take it is a miracle.

Get a pharmacist who gives a damn. Try an independent.

This. Our pharmacist calls us if the medication is very costly and there is a cheaper alternative, that way they don't have to fill it and then restock it after we arrive on site. They call the doctor if necessary to get a cheaper alternative approved.
Make sure to tell your doctor when you see them again, any decent doctor will appreciate the heads up on the cost.
On another note, pink eye medicine seems to be expensive as shite. It's like $120 for a Barbie doll sized eye dropper, like 0.5 ml total. Not sure how that is considering pink eyes been around forever.

mdomingue, I agree the study doesn't show accutane causes depression, but I think that is different than proving there are no mental or psych issues related. It's my belief that stating that hypothesis (no causation) might be a classic "argument from ignorance" (the name of the argument in logic, not my name). Argument from ignorance (from Latin: argumentum ad ignorantiam), also known as appeal to ignorance (in which ignorance represents "a lack of contrary evidence") is a fallacy in informal logic. It asserts that a proposition is true because it has not yet been proven false or a proposition is false because it has not yet been proven true. This represents a type of false dichotomy in that it excludes a third option, which is that there may have been an insufficient investigation, and therefore there is insufficient information to prove the proposition be either true or false. Nor does it allow the admission that the choices may in fact not be two (true or false), but may be as many as four,
true
false
unknown between true or false
being unknowable (among the first three).
Not trying to be difficult, but I am close to a man who was apparently altered by accutane, I would love to have proof of what the cause was if not accutane. I could be wrong.

people with this kind of reply do not realize how bad acne screws a person's life up/

Screw that doctor. He or she should have made that clear upfront.
We've had pharmacists tell us when something was very expensive. Not that I necessarily blame the Rx, but I'd wonder why I didn't get that warning from them.
Do doctors know what a script costs, generally? I know many will write it for the generic and say "it's just as good and cheaper," but I assume that is just based on common sense than knowing the prices specifically.

Someone said it earlier, GenRx, 90mg generic solodyn is $0.00 dollars shipped to your door if you have any kind of non governmental private insurance. They also have generic duac and epiduo for $0.00 shipped. That makes for a pretty good acne regimen. Accutane is like a miracle drug for acne btw.

Also not trying to be difficult, though I must admit it is kind of in my nature to argue. My apologies for that.
I also do not think this fits the definition of argumentum ad ignorantiam because there are decades worth of data that generally refute the argument that the drug is not safe for this reason. But as I typed my last statement I think I see the crux of our disagreement. I do not dismiss the possibility that a very small percentage of users may experience some effect related to or that exacerbates a psychological disorder, just that that is not sufficient reason given decades of real world data that dhows no greater likelyhood that untreated acne patients or those treated with antibiotics.
This is something I have looked into because my daughter is on this right now and I was cautious because of what I had heard. We have a close personal friend who is a nurse whose son used this with great results and no side affects as well as other acquaintances.
I do think it is possible that all things line up to create the situation in a few very specific individuals. I also advocate that people pay very close attention regarding moods, etc for people on any medication and especially for meds where there are some questions or uncertainty.
I also believe that there are times when people who appear to otherwise be normal have sudden unexplained breakdowns and since accutane is often given to folks very near of just after they are reaching physical maturity, I wonder if that may be as related to the onset of some psychosis.
I've had to deal with several people in my life who had psychological issues including a grandmother (stemming from the sudden unexpected loss of her husband, my grandfather, when she was a young mother with a 2 year old and a 6 month old. I never knew her as a completely rational and sane person) and a sister who married an abusive man and was pulled into the world of hallucinogenic drugs and was never the same. So I offer my apologies if I was a little harsh and I do feel for your friend and for you. I also applaud you sticking by your friend, I am very aware that it can be a difficult road to remain friends in those circumstances.

Holy crap. Be careful trusting your Dermatologist to write prescriptions. Just got a bill for $1,200 (for 30 pills) for a prescription of Solodyn.
Internet search appears that I could have gotten Minocyclin (have to take twice a day instead of once) for frigin $20!
That's what happens when the big titted 25 year old is allowed to bring the office staff lunch and flirt with the doctor.

I was 13 and 14 when I took it for right at a year and we figured out it stunted my growth when I stipped growing in 7th grade. Im the shortest male in my famiky at 5’7 and everyone else in my family is 5’11 / 6ft plus. It was a last ditch effort at that point bc we figured out I was allergic to benzoyl peroxide which is what every acne pad, cream, and Retin-A had in it. My Dermatologist said I had the worst case of acne he had ever seen in his 40+ years practicing.

It will go away on it's own too. The drops save you like 3 days of irritation.

No child has ever survived adolescence with acne ever before.
