Again, this is like the "OMG we will have less total gates" issue. I feel like whenever I'm in baggage claim at MSY, only 3-4 belts are actually ever in use anyways.

It's unconscionable that this wasn't deemed an essential component of opening the new terminal before doing so.

Of course it was essential. The state just didn't give a shite. It wasn't a priority to them. I'm sure politics has a lot to do with that.

Access is absolutely pay off the equation, and a major one at that.

What I was trying to say is that it's a seperate legal thing. State government vs the local airport authority who for all intents is controlled by the NOLA mayor.

By "actual airport" I mean the things that come under the control of the airport board.

Let me say it another way. When I go to Tiger Stadium and have to deal with the BS of driving down I-10 in BR and the roads leading to LSU, it may put me in a bad mood. But I don't blame LSU for that as it's outside of their control. The shitty traffic may be part of my "game day experience" but it's not one LSU can, by themselves, fix.

You also have to consider that MSY traffic is not consistent. Getting to the airport is going to be much harder, the day after Jazz Fest ends, or the morning after a major convention, than it will be on a random Tuesday at 1 pm. Hopefully, the city of Kenner and the state police / DOTD will have enough damn sense to easily adjust traffic signal cycles, on the fly, throughout the day. It may even make some sense on some days / times, to have police out there directing traffic.

The one piece that really, really concerns me, though, is 4-7 pm Monday - Friday, getting off I-10 West at Loyola. I know they are adding another lane to the ramp. But, you have a ton of people coming home from work to go to North Kenner and people going to the airport, as well as the backups from the spillway where it goes from 3 lanes to 2. Honestly, if i was going to the airport at that time, I'd probably exit at Veterans, and come down Vets all the way to Loyola.

this isn't a foreign concept and works at a lot of major airports. MSY has way to many baggage claim belts and it takes way too long to receive your luggage

Then you don't build it until that shite is lined up. I don't care who you want to point the finger at, this just seems like basic sense.

The crux of the whole concept is "common-use" meaning that all airlines share the infrastructure. While Delta, Southwest and similar carriers will be able to brand certain parts of the terminal behind security (like the 1-30 boarding posts, or SkyPriority queues), when they are not in use any carrier can use the gate or bag claim. The same goes for the gates connected to the FIS facility. They are called MARS-capable gates (or contact positions) and can flex between domestic/international and even aircraft types (one 787 position or two regional jet positions). The flexibility afforded by the new infrastructure more than makes up for having fewer gates/carousels, plus it is cheaper to operate in the long run.

You really think President Jindal was going to do anything to help a project spearheaded by Mitch Landrieu?

EBR Parish is building their own I10 exit at Pecue. That's been in the works for over a decade now.

If NO/Jefferson could build their own faster then let them go. Blaming the state when there's no money is ridiculous.

They should have done a phased remodel of the old terminals. Infrastructure is already there but they didn't. Whose fault is that?

Make sure that's an essential component of the proposal before you start construction - to include contractual assurances that it will be constructed concurrently with the terminal, so that you don't build and open a shiny new terminal that nobody can get to for four years?

They are finishing up the impact study and finalizing the plans and there's four years of construction on the horizon.

If they wanted an interstate exit ready for the grand opening they should have begun the process in 2012

What do you mean by lined up? The airport can’t force the flyover to be built. I’m sure they’re pissed that it’s taking so long but what else can they do? The airport has been planned and built over the course of many, many years. More than enough time for the flyover to happen.

It’s just not reasonable to ask the airport to endlessly delay construction so that they can potentially sync up with things outside of their control.

I'm curious if you could show an airport anywhere else in the developed world that was built before sufficient infrastructure existed to access said airport.

The fact that decision makers for this project couldn't figure out this simple concept is both horrifying and not surprising.

In the rest of the developed world, we don't have the FUBAR governance system we have here.

Wait. Something that is taking over 10 years to do, and isn't done, you are holding up as a model?

Come now. That sounds even more screwed up than this airport exit.

What should have happened is they should have built a tolled ramp. But that would require either the state to do it, or, the creation of a new toll authority (which would have required legislative approval), or give either the airport or the Causeway that authority (which would have required legislative authority), and besides, we know how LA hates them some toll roads.

They would have ended up with a more expensive, and less useful facility. No one in their right mind thought the state would act like this. Jindal et al took a giant shite on this because they don't like Mitch. Politics at the worst.

I mean, I don't put any "faith" in anything any government entity in this state ever does, but that's sort of the point, isn't it?

I love how you think this is somehow a scenario whereby there is one "side" that can be knighted for and one that can be shite upon.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. If you think it takes to long now just wait. Look... I WORK at msy. You simply fly out of it. Stop acting as if you are some special person because you fly a lot. You don't know dick.
