stry and deal with insurance companies on a daily basis. In this area(Baton Rouge) atleast, hands down, Farm Bureau is the best insurance company from a customer service stand point. Everyone you deal with are local and actually care about the customer, rather than just saving as much money as they can. Rates wise, I think they are pretty comparable.

I currently have farm bureau and they are bending me over

Damn. Rates wise, or claim wise? Maybe it's just the adjusters I get to deal with. They are the only insurance company I recommend to customers, and the only insurance company I deal with that seems to mix in common sense with car repairs. Every other insurance is ONLY about not spending money.

Do you want just enough insurance to legally get by, or do want insurance that actually helps you when in an accident. Just things to consider.

Insurers no longer reward loyalty. In fact I believe they treat loyalty as a sign that you're reluctant to make a change, so they jack up your rates.

So I use an independent agent now, and when my rates start rising I'll ask him to shop around for me again. I don't care who the actual provider is.

How does one go about doing this?

I stumbled across the guy I use, because when I bought a house here my insurer wasn't writing homeowners' policies in the area. So Riverlands Insurance here was suggested to me and I signed with them. Now they provide my homeowners, auto, and umbrella.

When I switched auto and umbrella over to them I saved $90/month.

However, any agent like this will act as a middle man and take a cut. So if you want to save the most you have to do the shopping yourself and remember to switch periodically.

Get quotes and go with the cheapest one

Do not do this! Im not saying you shouldn't shop or look at prices but to buy on price alone ignores the fact that insurance is very much like anything else and you get what you pay for. Ask this question "Am I just buying insurance to stay legal?" if the answer is yes then buy on price alone but if you are trying to protect yourself from the Gordon McKernans of the world then find a good company that won't abandon you when the shite hits the fan.

And no I do not work for an insurance company.

AAA, but I am not sure if they are writing new policies in Louisiana. They cut what I was paying to State Farm in half. You also have to join if you are not a current member. Well worth the savings, for me.
