A world with too many choices seems to be making people miserable.

Think about how many options for everything we have now. 400 TV channels. A million different shows on Netflix. Various types of round the clock news and sports content. And people are more depressed now than ever.

25 topics to choose from on OT page 1. This is the one I chose and now I'm miserable.

I can partially verify this, because I dropped cable and went to streaming, and I am happier.

It's actually too many carbs, sugar and not enough exercise.

I usually get overwhelmed trying to find a show on Netflix and put on Parks n recs, the office or the occasional Netflix featured movie.

Granted its a lot easier to "diagnose" depression now than ever and there are more people in the world, now than ever.

I also dont like social media and the fictional lives that we all follow and see and ultimately compare to our own. Its almost like at times, the average human mind hasnt evolved yet to handle this amount of information.

Its happening fast and more and more people feel inadequate every day because of the bragging and lavish lifestyles they see almost instantly when they pick up their phones.

Life was easier when people didnt know what all was out there. They just focused on their day to day tasks and their immediate loved ones. Now they feel this pressure to succeed to levels that are virtually unattainable because they want to be able to provide everything for everyone who sees all these great things.

This ultimately leads to the realization that what they are doing everyday most likely wont ever change. Que the depression

This is why socialism is on the rise. Freedom means having to make your own choices, which is sometimes difficult. Its much easier to just let government decide for you.

It is true though. We make ourselves miserable with excess.

IMO that’s less about the choices and more about not being able to see past the “flawless” picture portrayed to us in social media platforms of other people’s lives.

Do you think that seeing these extravagant pictures cause people to choose to actively seek out more and try to make changes to their everyday life, in an effort to strive for more?

Eh, I think there’s a far more detrimental effect when they think certain things are easily attainable because they don’t see the work/sacrifice in the background that makes it attainable. I think fitness/weight loss is probably the top example of that.

If more people would ace the house then see if the old lady will let you have sex with her they'd be happier. It works 25% of the time.

I think we can parlay our ideas together with this example.

Someone wants to make a change and loose weight. They start following a bunch of fitness pages on various social media platforms. They see what they want to look like, not knowing that these people have dedicated their lives to look that way.

So they start to diet and exercise for about 2-3 weeks and begin to see some results but not much. So they stick with it for another 2-3 weeks, start to level out, while still seeing all of these ripped up fitness professionals.

They start to feel like a failure, like they will never look like that, so some quit and just say frick this i cant do it. Because to your point, they wanted this change quick, but to them a total of 4-6 weeks is not quick, thats a lot of time and to not look like all these people on social media makes them feel like a failure and that they are wasting their time.
