On topic: McDonald’s fried apple pies were the pinnacle of dessert evolution. You knew you should wait long enough for them to cool beyond the molten lava stage before you bit into them, but you always broke down no matter how much you reminded yourself that it was going to hurt like hell and you’d have to deal with skin curtains sloughing off the roof of your mouth for the next 5 to 7 days. They were just THAT sweetly, crunchily, perfectly delicious.

And one thing the video left off was the absolute dopamine rush of realizing the Sears Christmas catalog or the JC Penney Wish Book had come in the mail while you were at school. At that point there was no further deliberation about what you wanted to do with the rest of your day; the only question was which kid was going to win first dibs.

Those of us born in the late 70's got to be a kid in the 80s and 90s so we were able to experience two awesome decades.

I would extrapolate that out to those of us born in the early 80's(80-82) as being able to experience both decades.

And they were the best.

Those things were crack but damn if they didn't burn the roof of your mouth to hell like you said.

I realize that your point is that Blockbuster was at the height of popularity in the 90s. But damn, son, your own reply proves it could be two things…….maybe the OP, or others in this thread lived somewhere that Blockbuster got it’s start…..

I am aware. I've backed them up to damn near every digital format.

It's pretty easy to lose digital media. Lost files is a hell of a lot more common than losing an actual physical object.

People lose physical objects all the time, sometimes due to their own carelessness, sometimes due to events outside of their control. Ask anyone who has lived through a natural disaster just how fragile physical media can be.

And lost files being "more common" is simply a function of people having bad data practices, especially in the early years of computer technology. In 2024, there is zero reason anything that's important to you shouldn't be backed up in at least two locations, one of which being cloud storage. If you do that, it doesn't matter if your house gets burglarized, burned down, or flooded: the data you care about is safe. Physical media can't offer that level of security.

But anyway, glad to hear you've backed them all up. Those are the kinds of things you just can't lose

The trick was to break off a bit of the top and eat that first. You'd probably burn your fingers a bit, but that was better than burning your mouth into oblivion. And that way, it would start to ever so slightly cool and you could keep it in the sleeve, which you wouldn't really be able to do if you broke it in half.

I’m not sure you know how to read a line graph. The first shows a significant dip in violent crime starting in 1980. The second shows a downward trend in abortion rates starting in 1981. The last does show an increase and spike in teen birth rates in the late 80s to a level well below anything from the previous three decades, but this was after remaining at near pre-1950s levels over most of the decade. What exactly do you think you were showing here?

I don't want to say I am not tech savvy... I just don't care. I'm not spending my time backing up files all over that place. From 2000-2010 I had an internet business and it was the most miserable period of my life.

Other than the ot I rarely pick up my phone. Hell I got my first touch screen phone just 3 years ago. 98% of my time I live like it's still the 80s.

If my phone makes a noise it's one of 5 people. I don't even have it connected to a carrier. I just use wifi and a messaging app. I receive no spam.

If I had to deal with the amount of notices most people get on their phones I'd 100% pitch it in a lake.

The 80s were great if you had money to spend. If you didn’t, then it was an endless parade of looking at all the stuff you couldn’t have. More so than other times because the media saturation reached a fever pitch.

The 70s were a better time to be young.

SFP’s chart is shite. It’s deliberately exaggerates the peak and doesn’t put it into context. Let’s break it down a little further.

Not even looking at the crime numbers, those of us who remember the 80s and esp those who remember earlier decades, knows there was a difference. Back then, yes the black areas were bad as now. But Section 8 had not yet totally destroyed so many neighborhoods. It was in the process of doing that. So the crime was contained.

The reason we look back at that time as safer is bc our childhood neighborhoods hadn’t yet turned ghetto. Nowadays the ghetto follows us wherever we go. The fed gov makes sure of it.

How does it "deliberately exaggerate" data?

What does a racial breakdown have to do with a discussion about the 80s?

Wrong. I had the opportunity to do this as a kid and didn't (and still don't).

We're adults, though, so it's not right to let adults live in a false fantasy world.

I think the 70s despite the economic bullshite was an incredible time to be a kid. We were free.
