People don't like truth interrupting nostalgia

Never have. This has been an ongoing meme on here for 15+ years.

I realize that your point is that Blockbuster was at the height of popularity in the 90s. But damn, son, your own reply proves it could be two things…

I believe the height of Blockbuster was the late 90s, actually.

Forming in the mid--80s doesn't mean much. It took a while for Blockbuster to get real market share.

What does a racial breakdown have to do with a discussion about the 80s?

Bc we’re almost all white guys here. The violent crime back then was almost all contained in the ghetto. So you can see how are nostalgia would not be affected by crime that didn’t affect us.

And the ghettos were small.

Even downtown Shreveport was fun in the 80s. Totally different dynamics from today

It still is.

If you look, white crime was higher then, too.

This halcyon view wasn't hidden, either. Our media was projecting this crime wave to keep going and you can see it in movies like Demolition Man and other contemporary movies projecting the late 90s. They thought the crime would keep going up.

Also, this halcyon view ignores all the economic issues. Again, you can see this in media. There was a legit fear the Japanese were going to overtake us economically.

People look back at the era as halcyon b/c it's nostalgia, but even if you were a white kid, and even though we weren't as connected in terms of information/data, if you paid attention, you knew there were major issues across the country.

The crazy thing is that it all just...stopped. Everything started dropping in the mid-90s after the near 2 decade spike. We still do not know why, exactly.

Lead gas is one of my favorite theories, though. Wiki for the Lead-Crime Hypothesis

Right. The ghettos were smaller and contained. It’s why crime stats don’t tell the whole story. There is now more widespread crime, even in nice suburbs there are now constant break ins and property crimes, catalytic converter thefts etc. It’s harder and harder to get away from the trash bc subsidized housing mobilizes the trash.

The stats today disagree with this. However, when a preferred narrative is busted, the standard go to is used: claim it's fake.

Now, there was 100% a Covid-related spike 2020-2022 or so, but crime is falling everywhere again and looks to return to the pre-2020 path, probably by the end of next year.

Crime is much more widespread nowadays. The ghettos have spread. It’s like the stand-up routine about the old mall and the new mall. It happens with apartment complexes and neighborhoods and entire suburbs. The ghetto keeps spreading. Well, in the 80s it hadn’t quite spread yet. Just look at all the posters here who grew up in various towns which are now unlivable shitholes.

Yes I remember that, and it’s been replaced with China. I remember the talk of devil worshippers and African killer bees and we were all afraid of quicksand. We do tend to remember the good things, that’s natural.

And there are places that were even more unlikeable shitholes then that are populated by rich people now.

Where I grew up is completely different post-gentrification than when I was a kid there (and you couldn't leave your bike unattended for more than 5 minutes or it would be stolen). It's more than just places like Los Angeles, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Miami, etc. And now, Oak Park, which had rich people in the 80s/90s, is a shithole.

That doesn't mean it's worse.

The theory has largely been disproven.

And things like mass incarceration only explain the violent crime. That's why I use more than just violent crime as opposed to back in the day.

That's why they're trying to find some environmental factor and one of the better ones is the Lead-based one above.

I don't want to say I am not tech savvy... I just don't care. I'm not spending my time backing up files all over that place. From 2000-2010 I had an internet business and it was the most miserable period of my life.

Other than the ot I rarely pick up my phone. Hell I got my first touch screen phone just 3 years ago. 98% of my time I live like it's still the 80s.

If my phone makes a noise it's one of 5 people. I don't even have it connected to a carrier. I just use wifi and a messaging app. I receive no spam.

If I had to deal with the amount of notices most people get on their phones I'd 100% pitch it in a lake.

While I understand your perspective, that has nothing to do with backing up files. It's essentially beyond debate that a file on your computer and backed up on the cloud is orders of magnitude safer than physical media sitting in your home or office. I'll leave it at that

I grew up in the 80s and it is by far the best decade.

But cassette tapes were the worst. One of the few downsides of the decade.

Your "boomer" teen birth rate makes no sense. People routinely got married right out of high school or even during high school in the 50's.

Naturally the teen birth rate would be high.
