A Story About Pepe The Frog

Pepe the Frog cartoonist (a liberal) speaks out about how his cartoon character was hijacked by conservative memeLord's and now used as a prominent right wing meme and his copyright battle to take back Pepe's image

On one level, the 90-minute documentary is about California cartoonist Matt Furie and his globally known creation, Pepe the Frog. The benign, chillaxin’ character was plucked more than a decade ago from the relative obscurity of the Myspace-sprung slacker-life comic “Boy’s Club” and transmogrified into a meme by 4chan users and others and cribbed by pop singers — before swimming into the sociopolitical mainstream in 2016 as a symbol co-opted by the alt-right and shared on social media by the campaigning Trump family.

First-time director Arthur Jones calls his movie a case study into what occurred optically during the 2016 election, told through the prism of “how a joke on 4chan became this larger story about how trolling moved off message boards and into mainstream Republican politics.” By October of that year, Donald Trump Jr. proudly posted to Instagram a “Deplorables” image featuring Pepe with Trumpian hair.
“Now, four years later, a joke that started on 4chan is moving into mainstream politics again, but it’s not about trolling — it’s about misinformation,” Jones said by Zoom from Los Angeles. “So this story might seem silly … but it’s actually something that still has a lot of cultural potency.”

I don’t understand how Pepe became MAGA, but I embrace it and always enjoy a good Pepe meme thread on the Political Talk Board

When I doubted that the great orange one would win the 2016 election, I turned to a story of how the win was prophesied through PEPE and ancient Egyptian images of him. I was assured that Hilary would not be my president, and all was well with me. Good times.

on one hand, I can understand being pissed/annoyed by a bunch of internet nerds taking over your creation and not having the resources to stop them
but on the other hand, the exposure he has gotten from this is more than he would have gotten otherwise, considering he is/was just some indie cartoonist with a small following

It makes me happy when some that is that liberal starts crying because things don’t work out exactly like they like.
Not all liberal thoughts are bad and a few have valid reasoning but when people get to the extremes, it’s comical to watch

This dude is STILL running around pretending that HE didn't steal Pepe the Frog from a Latin American children's show?

I mean it's still bizarre that the right is using a frog that pulls down it's pants to pee at the toilet.
But then when you think about all the toe tapping Republican politicians do at airports and it kinda makes sense.
